Stanford EPGY

hey everyone. i was wondering if stanford's epgy is just a summer program or if it really was a program for "gifted youth." is it a selective program or is it just a general program for anyone who can pay for it?

thanks a lot for your help!~

The original EPGY was and is a distance learning program, first in math and physics but now certain additional subjects. For grade school math applicants, they used to ask for some indication (standardized test, usually) of some high percentage of aptitude. You can check the current situation on their web site.

The summer program, on the Stanford campus, is related but different. IIRC, there is an application form and good students seem to go, but I don't thinks it's super competitive. At some age, look into regular college summer programs instead.

Can EPGY courses be used as credit in college?

Like I want to take Modern Physics....could it give me a college credit?

Stanford University gives Stanford credit to admitted students who took EPGY distance learning math and physics beyond the AP level. You also get a transcript from Stanford Extension (or some such name) which might or might not impress some other college, but I wouldn't hold my breath for credit. They should be impressed for admissions, though.

By the way, I believe the modern physics course has serioius prerequisites, including Mechanics, E&M, the third course in their calculus-based physics sequence (Waves, Heat, & some such) and some serious math, perhaps beyond what most non-EPGY students could get in high school, and current college students might not be eligible.
