One of my supplemental essays for Stanford is 274 words. On the Common App, it says the essays should be up to 250 words, but mine still fits within the 1800 characters (it's 1575).

Is this all right?

Yes. 24 words more isn’t a big deal.

Yes. The limits are suggestions. You can probably cut it down though.

My essay is, as of now, 542/250 words. I know that is too long, but I am having a difficult time cutting it down. Would anyone be willing to estimate what the absolute maximum words could be? Is 300 ok? or 400?

bump 10char

@redhippo: cornell didn’t punish me for writing 620 words when i should’ve written 500. i think 542 is definitely too much, but 400 might be okay. it depends on whether or not every word is meaningful. like, i had already cut my essay down from like 730 words, and i couldn’t find anything else to get rid of.

as long as its under 251 words its okay…

No, you’re going to die.

the character limit is 1800 though. mine is 300 words and its exactly 1800. i believe if you view it as a pdf, and it does not get cut off, its fine.
