So the Stanford essay asks about a subject that i find "intellectually engaging". I want to write about Creationism and Evolution because i find the subject to be really interesting and it inspires thought, but i don't know if the readers will think that its too controversial. Do you guys have any thoughts on this?

I think you answer your own question here.

Unless your thoughts are “Science is a lie made up by Satan” or “All religious people are idiots”, you won’t be penalized for talking about this.

well…ive heard Stanford is pretty liberal but i wasnt sure if talking about such a controversial topic would hurt me

Some of the most intellectually engaging topics are controversial. If that’s the best topic for you, that could work well. Again, as long as you are not hateful of others’ views, you should be good.

oh and for the essay, it asks for up to 250 words, but it also gives space for 1800 characters. which is more important?

The characters are just extended that much so people who use lots of big words don’t run out of room. You should use a maximum of 250 words, as is instructed.
