Stanford Fashion

I was accepted at Stanford and plan to attend. This might sound like an unusual question, but what do students (girls) typically wear? Do students wear sweats or jeans or sundresses? Are brand names important? If so, what brands?

I'm not from the West Coast, so I was hoping to get a better idea of what to bring :)

Thanks!

It is very laid back…you can wear whatever you want. Blue jeans, t-shirts of all types, simple polo shirts (unmarked the better), flip-flops are a necessity…here in the Bay area and Stanford included…the more wealth…the more they down-dress…they don’t like “showy”…

…you wouldn’t be able to tell who are the billionaire or millionaire kids are from the kids getting full scholarship by the clothes they wear…and that’s the way most kids like it…they are chill…

Flip flops, running shoes, leggings, jeans, t shirts, the only real “brand” stuff would be uggs and north face. Casual dresses or skirts would not be out of place. Heels probably would be. Some people have taken more to wearing polos and boat shoes now. (I don’t go to Stanford, but I go to a public school in the area). My boyfriend, who is going to be attending Stanford, says everyone there runs all the time and is very fit, so athletic apparel (like I said, running shoes - usually nike - and shorts and t shirts) wouldn’t be out of place.

This statement is not true…most of the students may be fit but most do not run regularly…they usually walk or bike with their flip-flops on…most students are not athletic nor athletes as some like to “label” it…many are proud true nerds and introverts…nor are they all party animals…but, most are laid back and chill in their clothing and their recreational activities…you can do whatever you want and fit in at Stanford…

For the most part, students dress casually. Some wear t-shirts, some sweatshirts, some blouses, etc. Some wear jeans, some shorts, some pants, etc. Some wear sneakers, some shoes, some flip flops, etc. I’m not aware of brand names, aside from Stanford bookstore clothing. You can find many pictures of Stanford students walking/biking around campus online. Examples are at http://grfx.cstv.com/schools/stan/graphics/cardinalred/football-graphics/11-stanford-life-photos-02.jpg</a> and http://www.stanford.edu/dept/rde/scs/images/sumconf_right.jpg</a> .

One difference from dressing in your area may be the weather. I’m originally from upstate NY. My parents didn’t really understand the weather difference, so they insisted on me packing winter coats, hats, gloves, and other cold weather clothing that I never used. The average high temperatures range from ~60F in the winter to ~80F in the summer. Lows are ~20 degrees lower.

Perhaps one thing not to bring is too many t-shirts. My freshman DS has commented that he has gotten so many shirts from all sorts of activities and job fairs, etc.

He finds it also refreshingly non-judgemental (vs. HS that had some preppy and upscale tendencies).

It is your four years…enjoy them by wearing what you want. You will fit in regardless.

Thanks so much for your responses, everyone!

You’ll want a decent jacket as it does get cool when the sun goes down and you can get caught out in flip flops and a tee shirt. A hooded sweatshirt or Northface type fleece jacket is perfect.

Hi! I’m a current freshman girl, and I thought I’d chime in.

The great thing about Stanford is that you can essentially wear whatever you want, and there will be tons of other people who are doing that, too. We’ve got super fashion-y hipster-y people who dress really well/uniquely, preppy kids in boat shoes & Nantucket reds, TONS of people who just wear workout leggings/flip flops every day, the “jeans and startup T-shirt” uniform, lots of girls in cute sundresses/skirts/shorts, athletes who never take off their Nike sweatpants… It’s awesome because personally, I love dressing up and wearing cute dresses and whatever most of the time, but if I have a bad day and want to wear my Lulus with flip flops and a hoodie, that’s awesome, too.

In terms of brands for girls, it’s not popular to be a really obvious consumer. “Showing off your wealth” is really not a CA thing - you’re not going to see a ton of people covered in designer labels. North Face jackets, Lululemon pants, Rainbow flip-flops, Urban outfitters are all popular, though. If we’re talking a little more upscale, a lot of girls have a Marc Jacobs purse, maybe some nice jewelry and some designer dresses for going out/formals… but honestly? Very, very, very few people care and nobody’s going to be looking at your brand names.

Most girls also don’t wear a ton of makeup, either, which is nice. I love wearing makeup, but I feel totally comfortable leaving my dorm without any on, if I want.
