Stanford Long Essay

On the long essay, the second choice, the quote, I have a sort of interesting development. I was going to discuss a quote from Catcher in the Rye, and I sort of led into it by discussing how my English teachers have compared me to Holden Caulfield and to Jay Gatsby. However, the quote proved rather dry, and the comparisons to Holden and Jay quite interesting. Could I get away with just doing my essay on the comparisons?

You're dealing with overdone literature here. They have probably read myriad essays on catcher in the rye and gatsby, so unless you have a unique way of going about it, I would not recommend taking this route.

wait, we have to write about a quote?

i have the paper version, and it dosent ask for a quote. can someone please post the long essay questions?!

"A picture is worth a thousand words" as the adage goes. Include a photograph or picture that represents something important to you, and explain its significance.

As you reflect on your life thus far, what has someone said, written or expressed in some fashion that is especially meaningful to you? Why?

For the second one, you don't have to write about a quote, although the prompt lends itself to that. But there's lots of other stuff you could write about.

This is funny because actually once I was reading a college expose or whatever (i htink it was rachel toor's) and she says that it annoys her to no end that high school students misconstrue The Great Gatsby and idolize Jay Gatsby. Jay Gatsby is not a hero. Just an aside. :)

Is it ok if me and someone else have really similar ideas? THis one person PM'd his essay and it was about a certain aspect of a musical intrument, and I also had an essay that was really close to that idea, so would it be a bad idea for me to keep that essay?

Sweet!
Another musician applying to the farm! Did you send in a music supplement? I just mailed mine today.......I'm so nervous. What did you write your essay about? Mine's about the spirit of jazz..........but I think it's kind of cheesy. There's not much you can do with the subject of music in an essay, I don't think. I might switch. Anyways, can I read yours? I doubt you play the viola, but it would be interesting to see what other people are saying about their instruments. What do you play?

Oh yeah, your inbox is full, so I had to post it. Oh and I don't think your essays should be too similar, they admit so few it's probably easy to recognize, especially if you both did music supplements early action, but I don't know for sure.

Well, I think I should be OK, because while I did write about how I hope and think I share his ability to live up to his conception of himself, I definitely used the two as bookends to show me as a person, differentiating myself from them. I would really appreciate it if someone could read my essay, especially filmxoxo17. Just post here or PM me, and I'll PM it over to you.

Yeah, I cleaned up my mailbox. By the way, I'm not applying to the music program, I'm just writing about it as my personal statement.

I'm only about halfway on my music essay, but I'll have my rough draft finished by Saturday.

i'm thinking of including a picture of me dancing...i dance to hindi film songs a lot, sometimes at events and a few times on stage.
would this be appropriate? i haven't really won any awards or anything
