Hi, iv recently been offered places at the Masters in MS&E at stanford and also columbia's MA in statistics after being forwarded from the MA in Math. Finance program. and im having a tough time deciding where to go.

I cant seem to find any reference to columbia's MA in Statistics in any forum. Does anyone know how good it is? it seems like i can do all, if not most of the courses in the MAMF program in the MA Statistics and more because of core module requirements. is the program well regarded?

i know stanford's MS&E masters program takes in a lot of applicants because of how broad the degree can be. how well regarded is it?

any advice would be greatly appreciated.
thanks.

do u mind telling us ur statistics...gre, gpa, etc.etc.
i am interested in appplying for a ms in stats as well and was looking into columbia.

if everything else is equal, have you thought about environment? new york city and palo alto are very different places. (even NYC and san francisco, for that matter.)

hi gargazond,

i'm a current student in the ma stats program, so i can provide some little insight

imho, the highlights of the ma stats program:
1. lesser course requirements - only 8 courses / 2 sem vs. 3 sem in stanford, which means lower cost
2. program is very flexible. out of 8 courses, only 5 needs to be from stats dept, the rest you can take from bschool, or, fe, math, etc.
3. location wise... depending on your interest, new york might be better than palo alto, esp if ur into finance. i think number of jobs are greater in ny
4. type of courses are very different too...
5. placement totally depend on you. name recog should be the same for both. finance placement is a bit lousy this year just because of the market
