Stanford music audition

I was wondering if any of the EA people had done the in person music audition. What was it like? Did you send a CD as well? Thanks.

I sent in a CD of piano and saxophone, and I really think it helped me get in. However, I did not do the live audition. I would recommend sending in a CD, as you are then able to show your best "live" audition. (Note that you are not able to edit)

How much of an impact does sending in an excellent music sample play in admissions?

I auditioned live, and I also think it helped. I think a live audition allows one to present one's personal performance style, an aspect of music that is very difficult if not impossible to detect on a CD or tape. Of course, to each his own; it all depends on what you're comfortable with. A live audition is also a great way to check out the music department.

Oh, and you can do either a live audition OR a CD, but not both.

About the audition - Get there early, sign-in downstairs, and you receive a slip of paper with your personal info and the name/room number of the faculty member who you'll audition with. Practice rooms were available (might have to wait a little while for one, though, which is why getting there early is nice). Then you just go wait outside the designated room; the professor brings you in when it's your turn. You play/sing your pieces, the professor may talk with you for a little while, and then you're done. It's pretty low-key and comfortable; I enjoyed it.

Good luck!

This relates to this topic......
I applied regular to stanford and sent in a cd as well of my piano recordings. This was in the first week or so of December, before the app deadline. However, I later noticed on the site that any supplements had to be recieved by stanford by around mid november. WHy is this so absurdly early? Do you think they may still hear my stuff? Alot of people applying wouldnt even start the application by then, much less send in a CD.

The early deadline for music submissions is there for a reason, I think - to give the admissions office time to sort out the submissions and (so I assume) forward the CDs to the music department for review.

Even though the early deadline is printed quite clearly on the form, I'm sure you're not the only one in this situation; perhaps you can call the office and ask if there's any way yours can still be squeezed in, and then just hope for the best.

I’m doing a live audition on the 24th. People who audition live are still supposed to submit the arts supplement from the common app right, but what about the part where you have to “Provide a web address where member institutions can view or listen to a 10-
minute sample of your work that demonstrates contrasting examples of expression
and technique” ? It looks like its one of the required fields on the online supplement.

singit22, just be aware that the thread you resurrected is over 3 years old.

There MAY be posters here that can help, I can’t say.

I would call or email Stanford directly and ask to have your question clarified by a knowledgeable admissions officer familiar with the music supplement requirements. Info like this is always best gained directly from the source.

Good luck to you.
