I need to choose between Stanford and Georgetown (SFS) as a West Coaster who would like to study International Relations.

Evidently, the program at Georgetown is very strong. How does the IR major at Stanford compare with the International Politics major at SFS? Is Stanford IR weak enough compared to SFS IPol that I should go to SFS, and therefore confine myself to an IR-based major, even though my interests may change completely before major declaration?

Also, how is the LGBT scene at both colleges? Does Georgetown's Jesuit affiliation cause any difficulty for gay students? I assume the scene thrives more at Stanford...

Thanks so much for any input! :)

Sorry, I don’t have much input on this since I don’t know much… Just wanted to say I am totally jealous of you (in a good way). Gosh if I had a dilemma between those two… that’d be a dream come true haha. Good luck!

Stanford and Georgetown are equally strong when it comes to IR. You are talking about Stanford, remember. The school has pretty much no weaknesses.

This is the only ranking-type-list I found for IR. According to it Stanford is #3 and Georgetown is #5

LGBT life at both schools is pretty good. DC is very liberal and progressive, especially with social issues, and Georgetown is quite reflective of that. Georgetown isn’t ridiculously liberal though, like Berkeley or NYU, but you shouldn’t have a problem either.

Stanford is, of course, also quite liberal. Again I wouldn’t say Stanford is as liberal as Berkeley or NYU, but it certainly is at least as accepting as Georgetown.

i know students at both schools from what i have heard the experience is better at Stanford. Stanford has beautiful campus and weather. palo alto is a great college town-very safe and lots to do and is near San Francisco. I have hears Stanford’s IR program is better if anything. A lot more laid back and liberal. I have heard that Georgetown can be elitist and somewhat uptight. However both are amazing schools.

thanks so much for your valuable input! :)

I would never choose Georgetown over Stanford! But I’m not you…

also my friend who is going to SFS was telling me that they have to take 17 core curriculum classes and its jesuit which is important to keep in mind when making a decision

Although Georgetown has a very good IR department, Stanford would be the better school.

What’s the COA for both?

What’s your final decision?
