Stanford, Penn, Columbia, Duke maybe

I just want to know if I have a realistic shot at any of these colleges. I am an Indian male from a very strong public school in the DC area. I have alumni status at Penn but dont know how much that will help. Here are some of my stats:

GPA: 3.94 uw/ 4.6ish weighted
SAT: M:790, R:680, W:770
SATII: Math IIC:800, Chem:790, USH:800
APs: BC Calc:5, USH:5, Chem:5, US Gov:4
(will take AP Physics and AP World senior year)
ECs: Academic team(will be on TV team as a senior)
Outside of school Orchestra (first chair trumpet 10th and 11th grade)
JV JETS team (engineering competition and we ranked 1st in the division and 4th in the nation)
JV Economics Challenge Team (1st in MD 3rd in East Coast)
Robotics Team
Science Competition team (VP)
Science National Honors Society
Med Crew (do stuff at a local hospital)
and probably Science Bowl as a senior maybe NHS
Volunteering: Some at hospital
Baseball assistant coach
Local Library
Looking into EMT
Summers: 2005 Camp Counselor
2006 NIH internship and also during the school year (thats why so few APS senior year)
Recs: probably very good but the counselor one will be weak because im in public school

I am looking into doing either pure sciences or engineering in college. can you tell me if i have a shot at my top schools, or any other places i should be looking at?

maybe i should add that i won the cornell book award and another few for my scores in the maryland math cometition

Stanford, Penn, Columbia, Duke are all a reach for you, given your CR score. On the other hand, if you're in the top 5% of your class (and especially if you're either the Val or Sal) you'd have a pretty decent chance at UPenn (they really like Vals and Sals). And yes, you're legacy status at Penn will help.

Now, I don't want to discourage you from applying to any of these schools. You're SAT2s are real strong, and may help overcome the CR score. Figure you have about an average chance at any one of these schools - say around 15%. Probalby a bit better at Penn because you're a legacy. Improve your CR score, and your chances will go up as well.

By the way, if you're looking for a top-flight science and engineering school that you would be more likely to get into, take a look at Carnegie Mellon.

4 kids who had legacy at my school were accepted...I think only one or two were actually partially qualified while the other two just had mom and dad empty their pockets a bit.

anyone else have any opinions about my chances at these schools? these are not the only ones im applying to, but jsut 4 i randomly picked off my list. and try not to say i need to improve my CR score because it probably wont happen, and 20 or 30 more points on it wont get me into any school and my 680 wont keep me out of anwhere.

I think if you apply ED to Penn you have a strong shot. Penn SEAS ED is much easier than RD, and the legacy will boost you in that round.

Is that internship the HHMI internship offered by Montgomery County, by any chance?

no one thinks i can get into columbia fu seas, stanford, or duke and the only way i can get into penn seas is by applying ED? have i really misestimated my chances?

If you have AIM, send me a message please venkater... sn: fengshuibundi

a 680 is fine...don't know what you people are talking about. Don't listen to the posters who are like "omg 680 REJECTED" instead look at the official results threads on this site.

RAHUL YOU ****ING IDIOT ITS ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(caps. oh and my friend knows you and says you suck at trumpet)

i'm gonna hunt you down at work and die of laughter, small world isn't it?
:-D

"maybe i should add that i won the cornell book award and another few for my scores in the maryland math cometition" Don't. Book awards are really common.

Yours stats are fine. 680 CR won't matter a whole lot if you're applying to an engineering school.

My only concern is that, aside from the NIH internship, your strongest ECs are teams and team competitions. I don't know how an adcom would look at it, but IMO, there's always a question of whether or not you played a central part in your teams' wins. If you take those ECs away, your other ECs are average (no offense, of course).

I don't think it's that no one thinks you can get into Stanford, Columbia and Duke. Unless something else about your app is STELLAR, though, your app will blend in with many others like it. I'd rank your chances as Penn, Duke, Columbia, and Stanford, going from most likely to least. I said Penn first only because I think legacies, backed up with decent stats, are shoo-ins.
