I will be taking my SATs this January for the first time, so no score yet, but I took my PSATs, and I got an estimated SAT score (based on the PSATs of Sophomore year, I’m not sure about Junior year yet as I’ve just taken my PSATs yesterday) of 1950.

@david: I’m not familiar with international admissions at a school like Dartmouth, I know that it’s incredibly competitive here. You’re a very solid applicant for Dartmouth, but I’m not sure how they treat internationals. Good luck!

@tyrtle: Sorry, neither of us knows anyone in the med school right now. Good luck at Emory!

@hicristen: too early to tell, just keep doing what you love!

@gnaz: you’re a solid applicant for the international field, but it’s still very unpredictable when it comes to international admissions.

BACKGROUND:
My freshman/sophomore GPA are kind of low because throughout my education i have been taught in Italian, and at the beginning of my freshman year I had a very very basic knowledge of english. This has obviously had a big impact on my grades. This also meant that i had less time to get involved in extracurriculars. I also live in a country that does not have any STEM extracurriculars available.

EXTRACURRICULARS:
-Volunteering:
-~20h volunteering at a church teaching maths to street children (not even sure it is worth mentioning (Freshman&Sophomore years)

  • I will probably volunteer at a somali school
    -Sports
  • Volleyball (Junior)

-I’m on the verge of starting a Fairtrade business between Italy and Ethiopia.

Prospective Majors: Either Molecular Bio/Biotechnology/Biomedical engineering, Materials science, Computer Science or International relations

I will probably apply to:
-MIT (By far my top choice, but does not offer EA to international students :frowning: )
-Stanford (SCEA maybe?)
-Princeton

-JHU
-UPenn
-Columbia
-Harvard
-Yale (only for international relations)
-G’Town (only for international relations)
-CMU (even if I get in there is NO WAY I can afford the tuition, and they do not give financial aid)
-Duke

I’m an international applicant(from Nepal) and I’ve completed my high school. Here are some of my informations:
GPA of 3.90
SAT1=2010
SAT 2=not taken yet
IELTS=7.5/9
Futhermore i’m a singer and i’ve recorded songs in many languages.Similarly i’ve got many certificates from NASA for participating in their annual programmes.Likewise i’ve done many social works too.and i was one of the best student in ECA,Furthermore according to my GC,my application essays are strong too…

Personal Thoughts:
Strengths: Course Load/Level, SATIIs, solid concentrated EC’s
Weaknesses: SATI/ACT, Major Awards, Ethnicity, W GPA

Also for schools that take Ethnicity into account, does being Japanese have a slight advantage than being the main stream Chinese/Indian?

@spirral: You’re a solid applicant at all of those schools except Cooper. I’m not sure what ED will do for your chances or how applications will be effected due to the recent tuition changes, however your scores aren’t really up to par with Cooper Engineering standards.

@caitiann: It sounds like you know it too, but you’re a very common Stanford applicant. It’ll come down to how the admissions committee feels you can contribute to the class based on the story you tell through your essays. Good luck

@TheMan we prefer to chance for Stanford I’m unfamiliar with that business school, sorry

@Amara: Age doesn’t effect your app as far as I know, I applied at 16 too. You’re an asian from california interested in Mechanical engineering, so it’ll be tough but you sound like a strong applicant anyways and you have a unique experience so I would push your diversity of interests. Good luck! 15%

@gnaz: not a lot of info, however you events sounds really cool! You’re still international though so it’s a crap shoot. Good luck!

@hichris: can’t give an accurate chance when you’re only a junior, you need to develop more and who knows what applying will be like next year or how many people there will be. Good lukc and have fun in high school!

What are my chances

Hi,

I’m not applying to Stanford because practically no one in my school gets in, but I would really appreciate it if you could ‘chance me’ for the following schools  (applying for mechanical/aerospace engineering). Thank youuu <3

Yale (REA), UMichigan (EA), UIUC (EA)
RD: Brown, Princeton, Cornell, CMU, Rice [and if you have time, GeorgiaTech, UC Berkely, UCLA, UCSD]
And if you only have time for one- Yale please (that’s my dream school !)

I’m Asian (Indian) & female, studying at a pretty prestigious international school. We do the IGCSE program in grades 9 and 10, and the IB diploma program in grades 11 and 12. So no rankings, no GPA. I realize that the ECAs I’m listing don’t seem like a lot (at least compared to some that I’ve seen on the threads here) but they’re really the maximum that most people in my grade are able to handle (because of the rigor of the IBDP).

Academics-

  • IGCSEs - All As (assessments in grades 9 and 10- either all As or mostly A*s and a few As)
  • IB - predicted 45, assessment grades - 40/42, 41/42 and most recently 42/42
  • SAT 1 - 2150 (all sections above 700) - I don’t have time to retake this before the application deadline.
  • SAT 2 Math - 800
  • SAT 2 Physics - score not released yet, but I’ve been getting 780-800 on diagnostic tests. will probably retake if below 770, but that score will not be sent to Yale as it will be past the EA deadline.
-I have academic awards in English, French, Econ, and “overall” (awarded to the top 4 out of 330 students)

School statistics- Yale 2160 and 44 (average), Princeton 2200 and 43, Brown 2100 and 41, Cornell 2130 and 41.

ECAs-
-Piano: passed Grade 7 exam with merit
-Drums: passed Grade 5 exam
-Percussion: Play for school’s band, orchestra and percussion group - won an award in school. Time commitment of 4 hrs/week (mentioned in common app). Grades 9-12
-Chairperson of a student initiative that raises funds for an NGO in my home country. Also volunteered at this NGO over the summer. Won an award in school for this. Grades 10-12
-Local service at a home for the disabled; won an award in school for this. Grade 11

Essays - About music & community service. Engineering supplement- mentioned all my experiences in the field of engineering. Counsellor & teachers happy with my essays, so I think they’re acceptable (but nothing spectacular).

Thanks !
