I am a first-generation college student... and immigrant as well. I'm going to be applying to Stanford EA...
Senior Schedule -
AP Physics C
AP Literature
AP Economics / AP Government
Math 53/54 M/H at UCBerkeley (Multivariable Calculus and Linear Algebra)
Math TA

Most of my Bs that I have received are from Freshman year. (4 Bs in freshman year, 2 Bs in combined Soph+jr year) So without freshman year, my Unweighted GPA is about a 3.94.

Schedule is without a doubt one of the most rigorous at my High School.

Other Info
School size - 2800
Dad- No college degree. Car Mechanic, but owns his own shop now.
Mom- No college degree. Factory Worker.

Immigrated here from China in 1993,when I was 6. Came here extremely poor.

Considered most diverse High School in the United States. We have 5+ people going to Stanford every year.

Recommendations will be decent- considering one of my teachers told me I was the most talented student hes ever had.

guessing your rank - you are in.

A toss-up. I had a 1580, 3.97 unweight, 3 Varsity letters and a Science Olympiad National Champsionship and I was waitlisted.

Good luck and I hope you apply/are accepted =)

Thanks so much for the responses.... one thing i guess i forgot to say was that also.. my school NEVER gets involved with the Science Olympiad or anything like taht. My School is very very unique in that we also dont have ANY kind of awards that it gives out. We also dont have boys state, girls state... ranking.... or weighted GPA. But we still have several HYPSM every year (at least 10-15 to HYSM... Princeton and Berkeley has problems with each other. We dont like them, they dont like us.. well.. they like us. but we dont like them) I'm also the only first-gen immigrant applying from my high school to Stanford with any kind of competitive stats (other guy.... no leadership, 1340 SAT).... so what do you guys think?

Boys State isn't run by schools, it's run by independent American Legion organizations. Isn't it?

but the school staff has to select one boy and one girl to it.... its not something that the student gets to sign up for (maybe it is, but the school selects the student that represents it)

oh btw. heres the rest of the schools im applying to as well.....
In order of preference:
Yale
Princeton
Penn-Wharton
Columbia
UC Berkeley (If i get regents)
MIT
Harvard
UC Berkeley
UCLA
UC Davis

What is your UC-GPA?

People's Republic of Berkeley. Ha ha ha ha ha.

How come UC Berkeley is listed twice on your list?

I say.. in your order of preference:

Yale - Macho reach
Princeton - macho reach
Penn-Wharton - somewhat of a macho reach, but still macho
Columbia - reach (i dare not call it a match)
UC Berkeley - Don't know UC GPA, but I say lower reach - match
UCLA - lower reach - match
Harvard - .. macho reach
MIT - reach - lower one?
UC Davis - safety

tlaktan - Berkeley is twice because one of them is saying IF I get regents (which i may. every single person in the last 5 years that applied to Berkeley from my music program has gotten into Berkeley. And 3 outta the last 5 years we've had at LEAST one Regents scholar.. and their scores arent better than mine.) then I will consider it over the other.

Interesting to see your opinion of my list... thanks for checking it out.

BTW. Berkeley and UCLA are much clearer safety-match schools for me.... I'm not too interested in them as "reach schools". Read above for why... and I also go to Berkeley High School and I am taking math at UCB. UCB used to take every single person that takes math there by default.... then it stopped cause most people who takes math there DO NOT go to UCB... so it artificially raised the acceptance rate.

Oh yeah. my UC GPA is 4.34

You'll probably get in - assuming your essays are good.

Heres my essay topic.... and ive posted it on CC before.. although right now its undergoing MAJOR changes....

the name i gave myself and the way that was essentially the beginning of a long and hard struggle for my family and I but we eventually made it in the United States.... (i.e. my family and I came to the U.S. and lived on top of my grandpa's pizza store with my cousin and her family.... it was one room separated by some sheets.... also my dad literally worked 15 hour days for 2 years and went from $4.5 / hour washing dishes to ASE Certified and Smog Check Licensed $30 /hour 6 years later. These are all things that will be an integral part of essay... because these are the things that I truly learned the most about life, perserverance, courage and compassion. From my past... I guess you can say I see life in a much different way)

shoot, yea, at this point, all u need is probly make ur essays above average, and ur in...(if not, then I will have some serious issues come decision time, haha, cuz we have like the same stats...)

lol thanks..... lets hope we BOTH get in! Good luck to everyone applying to EA or ED anywhere!

btw- I have a feeling Tlaktan doesnt like me.... hes president of the Young Republicans and i was President of Generation Dean..... and I'm from the "People's Republic of Berkeley..." O.O

bump... i'll only do it once.

I'm not a closed-minded Republican, irock1ce. I'm moderate-right, if anything.

Naah, I don't dislike you.. You sound like a cool guy.

hahah thanks tlaktan. I was just kidding..... you sound like a cool dude as well.

I think u really stand out by being the 1st generation and stuff

mmmm when im done and im about to send it out.. ill send you a copy of the final version and to anyone thats wants it... Its on the old forum but i think im gonna try to keep my essay on the DL until its sent.... although it is impossible to plagarize cause you would have to name yourself "Lake" when you were 6....
