Stanford Security

I heard that every campus has its own police, but how are the cops at Stanford?

For students at Stanford: do you feel safe?
For students who are not at Stanford but will attend: do you feel confident toward Stanford's security?

hey...did you hear about the virginia tech incident?

I have not had any reason to encounter the police at Stanford, but I have seen them drive around, so yes, they exist.

I feel quite safe here.

I feel completely confident about Stanford security. It works as long as you yourself are careful as well.

I honestly feel (perhaps naively) that Stanford has some serious preventative measures for potential shootings (which maybe should freak me out, but don't). Again, it might be presumptuous, but Stanford also has one of Princeton Review's highest ratings for Student Happiness. False security, in these latter cases, perhaps, but better than feeling insecure in a place that's about to be your new home. :)

The cops seem to spend most of their time giving students tickets. They are around, if you needed them they will be there, but with very very few exceptions there just isn't much for them to do but give tickets.

Stanford is a pretty safe place. If you don't lock your bike it might not be there when you get back. That's basically the only thing you need to worry about as a student. Sometimes things are stolen from dorms, but never if the doors and windows are locked and closed. If you are smart about things (just lock your bike and door) then you should never have a problem.

Although I personally feel very safe walking or biking across campus at night, if you don't feel safe there is a program called 5-SURE. You can call 5-SURE and a Stanford student will pick you up in a golf cart and drive you across campus. This runs from sunset until 2AM or so. In all honesty, most students just use this out of laziness, but if you were injured or didn't feel safe you could of course use it then as well. (Random side note: It's also a nice way to turn down a guy who offers to walk you home. "It isn't safe for a young woman to be walking back at this time of night, let me walk you back." "Oh, no, it's fine, I'll just call 5-SURE" "Oh, uh, ok... it was nice to meet you... ")

Great post all around, marlgirl :)

I imagine that happened a lot in the engineering quad :p

^^ hahahaha

Yeah, Stanford seems pretty safe. I remember reading somewhere that at Stanford, girls feel safe walking across campus at night, though I'm not too sure of its veracity.

I personally do feel safe walking around at night, but I still have someone with me because I don't want to be overly confident. Better safe than sorry.

Well... I mean... I know Stanford is pretty safe at night, but I was more concerned about students' safety during class...
