Stanford Student Advantage Card?

I just got the advertisement for the Student Advantage card (it offers a bunch of discounts for students who have the card) in the mail-- current students: any opinion on this? Have you found it useful enough to pay for itself or are you finding that you really don't need it?

If you think it's useful, would you reccomend buying the four year version or just buying it for a year?

Thanks.

I honestly have never heard of it. I can't find it on the Stanford website, either. Does your advertisement include a website with info? If so, I'd like to learn about it.

i remember this. i didn't buy it, nor do i think i would have really used it had i bought it. are you going to normally use all those discounts at those places? eh, probably not. there are better things to spend your money one. how much was it again, i forgot from last year...

http://www.studentadvantage.com/discountcard/
has more info... it looks like this is a thrid party thing? There are also discounts for more local things like Peninsula Creamery, House of Bagels, and Subway. Other things worth mentioning are amtrak (15%) and greyhound (15%).

It's $20 for one year and $45 for all four.

Part of me thinks it's a good idea, but another part of me knows someone is making money off this, and that profit is coming from students who visit places they wouldn't normally visit just to get a deal and students who don't use the card enough.

yeah...i just don't think i would have used it enough to at least save the $45 i had spent to get the card in the first place.

Unless you plan to go to/from Stanford on train often, it seems unlikely that you'd get your money out of this card. If you think you'll take the train 3-4 times roundtrip each year then the discount might be more than the cost of the card. I wouldn't bother.

A business frat at Stanford was selling some discount card that included reduced prices on Super Shuttle (or a similar service) that would probably make that card worth it if it's still offered. I think it was $6 off on each trip and the card cost $10 or so. (Is that about right? Does anyone remember?)

Related to transportation-- for Thanksgiving break (and probably other breaks) I'm leaving campus on Saturday and coming back the next Sunday, and I heard that the Marguerite doesn't run on weekends? Is there any other (less expensive!) way to get from the train station to campus/vice-versa besides taking a taxi?

Ugh, taxis are awful. In fact, I recommend shuttle over taxi. If you're curious as to why, message me... I don't want to complain too much on here =p

The shopping express is the only Marguerite line that runs on weekends. http://transportation.stanford.edu/marguerite/MargueriteSched.shtml for the schedules. The shopping express runs every 45 minutes from around 10 am to 9 pm. So, this is plausible if you don't mind potentially waiting at the train station for 40 minutes and if your flight is not too early in the morning.

I just noticed that you didn't include shuttle in your options - that's something you should consider. www.supershuttle.com for example charges about $26 one way from Stanford to San Jose airport. They've always gotten me to the airport on time, even though sometimes we have to stop and pick up other people. The service isn't perfect; when you're coming back from the airport, they can take up to an hour to pick you up :( but hey, $26 is better than $60 for a taxi (the only time I took a taxi it cost that much... I am NEVER doing that again).
