Hey! I know it’s early, but I wanted to see if anyone else on here is interested in applying.
I really want to do the course on Magical Realism since it’s my favorite literary genre. I’ve never had to apply for a summer program before, so I’m unsure of how to approach the essays (especially since there’s no min/max word count, so I don’t really know how to structure my answers).
What course(s) do you want to take? Does anyone know how selective it is? If you’ve participated in the program before, what was your experience like? Do you have any advice for writing the essays?
Haha bumping this post too. I’m thinking about applying to one of the philosophy courses, and the writing sample looks kind of hard (I don’t have a writing sample from school )
Same, I don’t have a writing sample from school either so I’m kind of worried about that part. It says you can take a previously written essay and just expand upon that, so that’s what I’ll probably end up doing tbh.
Ngl I’m also nervous about asking my history teacher for a recommendation since I’m an anxious/awkward person haha
@sparkatzz Hey, I know it’s been a while, but I was wondering how you’re doing with your application? So far I’ve drafted my responses to the prompts, but I still need to figure out what to do for my writing sample. Maybe we could help each other out?
does anyone know if applying for financial aid hurts your chances of getting admitted? the program is expensive, and I’m not sure my parents will be willing to pay the full amount, but I’m scared they’ll choose someone else over me because I’m requesting financial aid
@yoonqs If you look on the FAQ page, it says, “Aid…does not have an effect on your admissions decision as the financial aid committee only views financial aid applications once admissions decisions have been sent out.”
Also, btw, just be prepared that if your family makes above $60,000 you need to submit a letter explaining why you’re asking for financial aid.
for the last response, would listing out all the summer programs im planning on applying to affect my acceptance in any way? what is the purpose of the question?
@yoonqs I’m not sure. Maybe they’re just looking to see their competition or what others things you’re interested in? Regardless, I don’t think it’ll affect your application (I listed where else I was applying).
Hey everyone!!! I participated in the Humanities program last summer and I loved it!! I was in Self, Place, Style with a very fun former Stegner Fellow (Noah Warren).
@yoonqs as someone who applied for aid, I received the acceptance and financial aid. It will not hurt your chances at all, I made friends with another person who also was accepted with financial aid.
Just so you all know, they focus on your writing samples as that is how the instructors pick. These instructors will select you based on your writing samples so put your best foot forward.
In terms of the samples, I kept the spacing at the default, used whatever font I liked and just showcased the different styles of writing and my progression of writing. I would suggest reviewing the works you send in because I saw some minor errors in mine only after I submitted for the early decision.
Personally, when I was showcasing my works and responding to all the essays, I was as honest as possible. I wrote about myself and really just focused on bringing out the core in myself. I really took the time and effort to infuse all my essays with my identity and I also spent the time working to show that I had a strong handle on my writer’s voice. I took the time to really show that I was a strong writer and that it was my strength.
@inflorescent in terms of selectivity, I would not rate it as too selective considering my friend and I both got accepted but I had a strong academic record and test scores. My friend (the one who got in with aid) said they applied the year prior and did not get in so it may still be relatively selective.
If any of you have more questions, ping me or send me a message and I’d be down to answer them to the best of my ability.
Leave it blank-they are trying to find out where else you are applying to understand their competition and determine how likely you will be to accept their offer.
None of their business.
Many of these school summer programs are just cash cows --they do not offer any boost in your application and of course, they are “need-blind” --Not so----If you do get accepted try to figure out how many received a scholarship–I can tell you from other programs not many-if it were truly need-blind it should be more than 50% at least of the entire student summer population.
These programs exist to generate cash for the schools and many kids, especially international students, are only too happy to send a check their way. Almost every school is now offering such a program–the best ones make it clear that it will have no effect on a student’s application, but it’s like $6000 piece of catnip. Good Luck everyone!
I haven’t attended this program, but I’ve done a crap ton of research (too much) on summer programs…
Do they ask for a PSAT/SAT score? If not, then no. Even if they do, whether they accept you or not will not depend on your PSAT/SAT score so don’t worry about it too much, there’s nothing you can do anyway.
I don’t know about the profiles, but it’s relatively competitive. The frustrating thing about summer programs is that most don’t publish acceptance rates so there’s no way of knowing, but SHI should be more selective than the Stanford Pre-Collegiate thingy where there are a bunch of courses to choose from, but less selective than SUMAC (also at Stanford).
Definitely essays, maybe recs too. This is the case with most summer programs - I was accepted to YYGS, a summer program at Yale with around a 30% acceptance rate, and my grades were pretty good but ECs were not, so I’m guessing it were my essays that got me in.
@college0514 I don’t think not having a PSAT/SAT score will hurt you since other tests are accepted equally (and the requirements are different for internationals anyway). I’m from the U.S. and I applied without a PSAT/SAT score (I just sent in my score for my most recent statewide standardized testing, since I have yet to take the PSAT).
I applied early round and my first choice is Revolutions. The decision is coming out today, according to the website. fanatically refreshing
Has anybody heard back yet?
Also anxiously refreshing…
I’m actually an international student and it’s late at night now
but I don’t think I could sleep before receiving the decision
