Stanford Summer Session (High School)

I'm interested in applying for Stanford's Summer Session, and I'd like to know if anyone here has ever attended it or know a lot about it.

How hard is it to get admitted for the session? Haha, I mean is it almost as difficult as getting accepted into Stanford itself?

Thanks

I have the same question. My parents are trying to make me apply, but I just don't think it's worth the $10,000 or so. Besides, that would be 2 months out of the summer when I should be working on college apps for senior year, studying for possible retake of the SAT, volunteering, summer hw for AP classes, relaxing, etc. Is it actually worth the time and money commitment?

I've heard from secondary sources that this was a good program. It would be good to hear from a fellow CC'er about his/her experience ....

D, that's hella expensive. I guess if you can get a Letter of Rec from on the profs. that teaches you that would be cool, but $10k. Holy S!

^^ Lmao, I know right. Apparantly it's because of the cost of the credits. I would feel bad making my parents pay that much for it, but they are just so enthusiastic about it.

We are a little off track here as OP really wants to know about the difficulty on admissions. I have heard from secondary sources that its competitive but not extremely. In this environment, I would venture that institutions like Stanford would spend a little more time on programs like these. There is no doubt this is one of their highest margin programs.

On cost, to each his own. Obviously people pay it. Same for those internship programs. We all scoff at the price. But there are nearly 1,500 kids doing that program. They can't all be idiots....

I went there last summer. Honestly, if I could go back I probably wouldn't have done it simply because I'm mostly an academic guy and most of the people there were... well... emotional, hormonal, and lazy. But that's just me. :) Most people enjoyed it I think.

They do have scholarships, and the price per credit is actually just over half price of the normal price of a credit. So it's not that bad if you think about it ;) The price for room and board is included, but really amounts only to around $10 per day and food is just over $8 per day. It doesn't hurt to apply, anyway, and see if you can get financial aid. If you take nine units, don't worry about having free time - you'll have plenty. And for working on college apps... most college apps don't even open until July 1st, and aren't due until November or December. So don't worry about it :D

It's nowhere near as hard to get into as the University itself. Don't waste your money, apply for TASP and RSI, try to get a research internship set up somewhere, get involved in some local program.

I just got into this, it looks great, but I’m worried that its a money trap. Anyone go to it, and can tell me their experiences? The alternative is OC community college, but I need more courses.

I’m really interested in astronomy. How’s the observatory there ?

Do we even have one? I don’t even know.

Well you are taking real Stanford courses, some graduate and current students also attend and were in some of my classes, so the classes are obviously great. No, its not as hard to get in as the real college. I had a great time and recommend it, but no it does not help your opportunity for admission into Stanford. If you are willing to pay, then go for it! It was just like going to college: living on campus, going to classes, visiting San Fran and Palo Alto, and I met a lot of cool fun people. But I understand it is expensive and there are plenty of other productive ways to spend your summer.

it is no help for admissions
it is not nearly as difficult to get admitted as is the university

but it is a fun learning experience
thats about it

It was a very good experience, at least for an international like me. I learned a lot from the program, taking classes that are not available back at home. I made so many close friends that will be friends for life. Honestly, everyone who goes there has to be somewhat rich and it can only help you build more connections with people from all over the world. It is a good chance for you to show that you can succeed at college level and it could help mostly when your test scores are lower than average. I would highly recommend this to anyone who’s intellectually and socially engaging.

I got accepted and yes it is epensive but I WOULDNT turn itdwn for the world. I’m definitely going for it good luck

I honestly don’t see the value of summer school at Stanford. It’s really just a means of making money – it doesn’t help you in admissions or anything and you don’t really get that much of a feel for the level of coursework.

I suppose if you want to get a feel of the campus and whatnot, but other than that, I don’t really see the value.

Is it possible to apply for this summer program if you didn’t get a letter?

^^ yes it is. I believe all you have to do is to be a junior or sophmore in HS.

However, again, the program isn’t that hard to get in.
I got into the program last year and tried to see how much FA I would get for the program. It turned out that taking 2 classes would still cost me ~10k after the 2k financial aid. (Just to give you an idea of my situation at the time, I was on a level that qualified for pell grant)

I ended up turning the offer down and took 2 classes at my local university while doing some research as well. (UC, mind you though, its still expensive, and i would highly recommend city college courses, but i got some funky enrollment date even though i signed up hella early and all the classes I wanted had a full waiting list and had to write off city college) Turned out pretty well so…

I know a few people who did EPGY summer at Stanford, and the experience varied from subject to subject. Apparently the math one was pretty interesting.

ehh, I think I’ll just work. Make a couple grand. I feel guilty for taking off work to take a course last summer.

Great program!
