The Stanford supplement asks three short answers questions:

Stanford students are widely known to possess a sense of intellectual vitality. Tell us about an idea or an experience you have had that you find intellectually engaging.

Virtually all of Stanford's undergraduates live on campus. What would you want your freshman roommate to know about you? Tell us something about you that will help your roommate -- and us -- know you better.

Tell us what makes Stanford a good place for you.

The directions state that the responses have to be at least 250 words, but should not exceed the space given ... which is 1800 characters.

I don't get it. So the responses don't have to be at least 250 words?

But those directions appear RIGHT underneath the short essay section.

I am wrong, it does say that. But if you fill up the space, you will have about 250 words (assume approx. 6 characters per word - 300 words). I would just go with it, I don't think they will count. If it's a little under, it should be fine. But they give you that much space for a reason.

250 words is usually under 1500 chars. my 350 word one was around 1900 chars, so I cut it down a bit to 325 and it fits. so 250-325 should be the right amount.
