Stanford University Fall 2019 Transfer Thread

@FreedomWind In my class I believe there were 11 or 12. This year I believe there were 8 or 9.

@mjr2013 you did not reply me!I tagged you buddy…

@NSTHETG your odds are likely <2%, same as everyone else. Intl will make it harder for you. GPA/test scores are great, but then so are those of 100’s of others that apply. The EC’s are good, but most of the transfers have top 1% ECs. ECs are what separate the people that gain admission as there are in excess of 2000 transfer applicants and you can assume half will have 3.9 GPAs and good test scores.

Source: mjr2013 isn’t the only Stanford transfer that lurks on these forums

All you can do is apply and pray like the rest of us

@NSTHETG I saw you tagged me, but hadn’t seen a question in there until now. As the last post said, it’s pretty hard to gauge your odds relative to everyone else’s. I do love the determination though. Best of luck to you.

@mjr2013 Have you ever heard of transfers in Art or related programs, or are transfers mostly in STEM? Also, what if I never took the ACT? Should I take it now or just submit the SAT?

Feb 9th is last day to take the ACT

@mjr2013 , why do you decieve all these people, you are not even a Stanford student!!!

Totally joking  To everyone else in the thread, I am actually a transfer from last year, and MJR2013 was kind enough to answer some questions for me, and I can attest that he is that same kind soul in person.

Since I believe in giving back, if there is any question I can help with I would be more than happy to. But I would say this. Do not focus on your grades, your honor roll, or blah ba blah blah. All that is a given. I mean, of course you have a good GPA if you are applying to Stanford. Focus on being a great person. resilient. Focus on how you are going to be happy with your life. Why do I say this? Because I would say that is a great description of everyone in my transfer class from last year. And then, if you do not get in (But I hope you do!), then you still have found a good vision for yourself. And in the end, that is a very important thing

there were 24 people who officially enrolled as transfers. The awesome core of 24, as our chant went during new student orientation

Congrats @jasonpyres ! What were your stats if I may ask? Did you post earlier? Sorry if I missed it.

Hey everyone! I’m applying as a sophomore transfer for fall 2019 as well:) Here are my stats:

Current school: top 20 private university
Race: white and Native American (Cherokee Nation)
Gender: female
Home state: Ohio
ACT: 35 composite (36M, 36S, 34E, 34R)
High school GPA: 4.936 weighted
Class rank (high school): 1/305

College GPA: 4.00 (no honors program available as freshman, but I took a very full course load with notorious premed weed-out classes)
High school ECs: competitive gymnast from 2008-2018 (stopped due to torn achilles), varsity cross country runner (HS), private viola lessons, peer tutoring, Key Club treasurer
College ECs: Figure skating club president and founder, Women in STEM club member, tutor for Varsity Tutors, nanoscience lab research job
Intended major: Materials science and engineering

Awards/honors: Junior Olympic gymnastics gold medalist, three-time Junior Olympic gymnastics silver medalist, two-time Junior Olympic gymnastics bronze medalist, US national gymnastics champion, US national gymnastics bronze medalist, fifteen-time Ohio state gymnastics champion, six-time Ohio state gymnastics silver medalist, six-time Ohio state gymnastics bronze medalist, Ohio High School Athletic Association Scholar Athlete award, valedictorian, Summa Cum Laude latin honors, University of Cincinnati Behavioral Science Award, Ohio Soybean Association Research Award, Anderson Hills Educational Foundation Scholarship, Dean’s list, and Phi Eta Sigma Honor Fraternity.

Hooks: Junior Olympic gold medalist and US national champion in gymnastics, had to provide for family due to long-term medical issues last fall and winter while balancing school, ECs, and applications

Reasons for transferring: my current school does not have an engineering department, emphasis on undergraduate research involvement, students are passionate about more than just their school work

I applied as a freshman, but my application was really scattered due to severe family problems at the time where I had take over as one of the heads of household temporarily. I’m really hoping for applications this year to go better:) Best of luck to everyone applying!

@min517 Great stats hope you get in! Dont rush the transfer though if you have to build another solid year with more stats. IMO most schools looking for students with min 90 Credit transfer (quarter) system. I am sure you will get into school but if not dont rush it because you can have another year of a much cheaper CC. I am not sure if you are coming from a California CC but that will help and the reputation of the CC helps! Last year I had like 60 credit hours great stats and was still told I needed to get a wider base of classes. You will 100% get into a good school but if you want the elite you may have to go 1 more year to CC! best of luck hope this helps

@KPitsME Thank you for your feedback! I’m actually coming from another top 20 private uni, but I’m transferring mostly because my current school doesn’t have an engineering program (and for other reasons). I wanted to transfer this year so I could be sure that I finish my engineering prereqs on time to graduate. If you don’t mind me asking, what was/is your major?

@min517 Poli Sci/Humi - Pre-Law, Was going to do the B.S while waiting to transfer but teachers advised against it and told me to keep my GPA up. If you are coming from another private you should def get in somewhere! After talking with many teachers at De Anza I see the greatest importance is getting into a good grad school exp for law. Its good you have found the path you want to go and you are still very young! Cal Poly and Cal Tech are also great engineering schools if you are trying to come out this way! De Anza is loaded with competitive engineering students and I have seen first hand the challenges from working in the Honors office, so i commend you for going that route. If you dont make the switch this year knock out all your G.E even tho i am sure you have most of it done! I say go for it though all they can do is say no and try to apply again. I have found that academic stats for undergrad are deceptive and your story, EC and future plans is what gets you in! I have almost a 15 year gap in my education and lived a crazy life but I am so happy to come back to education and the past 18 months at De Anza have changed my plans. I live close to Palo Alto its a great place but always good to have backups exp. for your comp field.

@KPitsME Again, thank you for your help! I plan to major in materials science and engineering and then possibly go to grad school to get a doctorate to do research in nanoscience. The number of times I’ve changed my plans in the past year is pretty high, but since I’m working as an undergraduate researcher in a nanoscience lab, I’m pretty sure that materials science and engineering with a possible minor in math or chemistry is what I want to pursue. If I don’t get in I’m not going to be too bummed because it’s so competitive, I just want to see what happens. I feel like it would be a missed opportunity not to apply though.

@min517 Not sure if you have targeted the Bay Area possibly check out UC Berkley as well I know that field is tuff but at least Berkley puts you in the Bay were you can have tremendous opp. There Transfer is in the Fall and would also give you time to complete the O-Chem cycle that I believe is req. I applied to quite a few schools for the upcoming transfer but I am also meeting with UCB counselor at my school next week. Take shots at a few try to get Common App fee waivers if possible. UCSF also has a badd ass med research school and I am sure you would like the Bay Area lots of Opp for Bio Tech/ Nano Tech this is where you would want to be. Sometimes the most beneficial things to get into the good grad school is the Internships and connections you make while in school. I believe the Bay Area would be a great spot for you

@KPitsME As much as I would love to consider the Cal schools, I can’t afford to go to a school that can’t cover 100% of what I need in financial aid. I would really like to go around the Bay Area for grad school at least though.

I have a fee waiver for a couple schools so that will help a bit:)

@minajestynic I had a 4.0 at a CC, and am 37 years old. My hook was I sold pot, and went to prison, and taught myself chemistry and calculus with nothing but a textbook

my honest advice is yes, have good greats, but focus more on being an outstanding, resilent person. Everyone I meet here is kind, and resilent. It cannot just be a mere coincidence

Hey everybody, first post here! I’d like to join the ride  Is Matt around? My name is Matt too lol

@jasonspyres just want to say bro way to survive! I am now 32 as of today, I have been at De Anza for 18 Months and done well I have close to a 15 year gap in my “education” but have lived a full life since. I have had a similar path to you and have tried to be forthcoming on my applications. Some teachers have tried to steer me away from my story but I feel there is no other way to explain life events. I applied to several school you can see my stats on prior pages. I am looking for some advice and open to any suggestions if you could email that would be great I cant seem to send messages yet. my email is kpitsme123123@gmail.com I live 15 min from Stanford and even If I dont get in I have a plan! I really think you could help me out this is my first time applying to a college ever. I am happy you made it were you are and I also do not believe in mere quiencidences and firmly believe things happen for a reason! thanks man and congrats!

@jasonspyres No lie, that sounds like it could be a great movie script. That’s awesome. I appreciate your advice on focusing on the inner “you” in the application, and that seems to be a repeating pattern I hear from current and former Stanford students. My question for you is could you give more info/clarity on how you framed the fact that this acceptance/denial from Stanford will not affect your future. Like I am confused how you implemented that into your application. I am assuming you mean to write essays that just represent yourself and not so much your academics so that the readers understand who you are. Then your transcripts and EC’s will back up the rest? Let me know your thoughts. I know this is a longshot application but I want to put my best foot forward. Thanks
