In any case, I will admit that Berkeley and Stanford are both good schools. They just train their students to do different things.

That's a dumbassed comment. So if I go to Berkeley, I can only be a hard worker and not a leader? College doesn't mold all of its students the same way. A lot of people go into Berkeley already being natural leaders.

^ Sam Lee, I know this isn't an exact science, but a long time ago, I made a thread about how much people differ in their best verbal + best math vs. their best one sitting SAT. I took it three times, and the second time, I improved in one and dropped in the other. Most people are like this.

The average difference between the 2 methodologies was 30-50 points in the thread I asked.

Also, remember that the richest college graduate in the world was a Berkeley graduate. Mayasoshi Son was worth $76 Billion dollars, to become the richest college graduate ever. And guess who his concubine was? Yup, it was Stanfurd's most famous Asian, Jerry Yang.

The message here is, if you are from Stanfurd and you want to be rich and famous, make sure you become a Berkeley guy's obedient biyotch!

LOL! So the richest man has no college degree; by your logic, it's better not to go to any college, including Berkeley. ;)

^ Well the richest Asian man in the history of the world went to Berkeley for undergrad.

And if you follow the path of how the richest Asian man went, then he succeeded partly because he had an above average concubine in a Stanfurd Asian. Personally I like my interpretation better than yours Sam Lee.

It serves my purpose better... ;)

this is like the ucla vs usc topic
ucla is better than usc but not by that much
stanfurd is slightly better than cal, but not by much
i love cal and am going there next year...i can admit stanfurd is slightly better but some people here (rooster 08) think there is a massive difference, where in fact, there is not
anyways
i didnt even apply to stanfurd bc berk is the place i wanted to be at
not down at the farm
so just admit it, berkeley is on the same level/tier as stanfurd

ok this is crazy!
i read the whole thread
this has to be the most entertaining thread ontis site!
Anyway I just got into berkeley
But im not going....
Im going to Amherst
earlier i was confused but when amherst offered 36000$$$ aid...!
i pretty much decided since berkeley doesnt give international students aid.
I hope im making the right choice? .....right???

oh yea. nothing beats almost full-ride at one of the most prestigious LACs.

but if the aid was not a factor (it is in my case!)

would you go for amherst or berkeley?

Probably Berkeley since probably very few from where are you have heard about Amherst.

Hmmm..but if it's not a factor, why you seemed all excited? ;)

conor...so you're gonna stoop down to their level?
if they go jump off a bridge...will you? it is essentially the same thing...I mean if they are saying that berkeley kids are all dumb stanford rejects..then let them..let them rot in their ignorance..dont make urself look bad by stooping down to their level.

oh and btw to clear up that misconception..here are some hardcore facts. There are actually more white kids at Berkeley. When you look at U.S. News (and this is not like a ranking but rather based on hard core facts) Stanford is more diverse than Berkeley. Here is the ethnic breakdown from Stanford:
African American 12.3%
Asian American 24.6%
International 6.2%
Mexican American 9.2%
Native American 2.2%
Other Hispanic 2.8%
White 37.3%
Unidentified 5.4%
so..there you have it...the numbers speak for themseleves.

I'm proving a point by illustrating the stupidity of these arguments/rants/badmouthing of perfectly awsome universities (like cal and stanfurd). Don't get me wrong, a little banter is fine by me, but people should see the flipside of the coin if they choose to use retarded arguments.

according to fall 2003 staistics, uc berkeley has
4% african american, 39.8% asian, 10.7% hispanic, 30.3 % white, and 10 percent either other or not stated
uc berkeley has a smaller percentage of whites than stanford
if you assume that they have more because of sheer numbers than that is correct
but
stanford has a smaller asian % and a higher white %
your argument is clouded with opinions and falsified data

mtb1226,

more asians than whites doesn't make it more diverse. i actually find some berkeley people here tend to be kinda "asiancentric". lol! stanford has more balanced proportion of different races. stanford has significantly larger % of blacks. it also has slightly larger percentage of hispanic/latinos.

Sam
according to the statistics they have very similar %'s of hispanics-berk:10.7% vs. 12%, thats a very minute difference
and cardinal 08 also stipulated berkeley has more whites, "There are actually more white kids at Berkeley." This is incorrect based on the percentages, and only factual if you use the argument that berkeley has more students because the lower percentage of whites (higher student body population) still outweighs stanfords number of whites.

hey mtb1226,

Look up Princeton Review's "most diverse student population" list..and US News "Most diverse universities" list...Stanford beats Berkeley in both. In fact, Berkeley does not even make PR's list. I might be biased but these cant be "clouded with bias" as they are put together using just numbers. and btw...how can you say that I might be biased when in fact you might be biased also in making your claim? ignore what i said, fine, but look at those lists...they speak for themseleves.

If you refer to my first post, I never said Berkeley was more diverse than Stanford. I was just trying to make a point that they are both very diverse campuses and this aspect of the argument is going nowhere.

The only complaint I have about Berkeley is that the undergrad. admissions process is the same as the other UCALs, although it is clearly a step above them. Frankly, it kinda sucks.

West Sidee, you're the hugest tool ever. Do you know Jerry? I do. My dad was studying literally in his cubicle at Stanford Engineering for a doctorate. I played cards with Jerry as a little kid. Think twice before you run your mouth about concubines. What's all this about whoever-son and his richness? Before you start hating on how Stanford is so full of rich white spoiled kids, think about how much you claim on that asian guy's wealth and his ability to b*tch out the founder of Yahoo.

Get over your inferiority complex. Most of us here have big respect for Cal and the rest of the UC, but we all understand faults with private and public institutions. I don't care if you have to work twice as hard for your grades in the glorious, money-strapped, community college student-plagued UC system. Go for it; enjoy it. Think of it as playing catch-up for those of us who did all that work while we were still in high school.
