Stanford vs Dartmouth

My S has two great choices; wondering about relative differences in premed, housing and community spirit; frustrating that admit weekends are the same..
(posted on Dartmouth page too)

My S has the same wonderful choice to make. Plus, his senior prom conflicts with both Stanford and Dartmouth's admit weekends

yeah ive got same prob here too...stanford v dartmouth v rice...and admit weekends are all at the same time and i have an academic competition that i am obliged to attend on those dates too...ahhhh

admit weekends are shows that colleges put up to lure in admitted students. They are usually a lot of fun, but to actually see what the school is like, you are better off visiting on a regular day.

Stanford's Biology program is #1 in the nation. As a result, premed is a very challenging but rewarding experience. The focus is on learning and research, not "weeding out" kids. Research opportunities ABOUND at Stanford.

Housing is very varied at Stanford--from the usual sometimes-drunk dorms to smaller row houses to theme houses to apartment-style and so on.

Community spirit--Stanford is not terribly competitive, and students are truly happy here.

how good/bad is grade inflation at both schools? i got into one and was waitlisted at another and dont know what to do

Grade inflation is pretty noticable here. Basically, you can work pretty hard in a class and make a A-, and have to pretty significantly drop the ball to get a C+ (at least for freshman year, apparently it gets easier in the later years). However, the only practical implication of this is that it's really hard to fail out. Stanford throws in plusses and minuses that make a difference for GPA. Basically, take your normal grade scale, compress the range of it, and move it to the upper half.

Deadhead,
Anyone with the screen name Deadhead has to choose Stanford. Please refer to Kesey's Electric Koolaid Acid Test.

Stanford :)

harvard :)

Actually, the author is Tom Wolfe. Kesey is one of the subjects of the book.

stanford of course, Dartmouth is not in same league. Dartmouth is more like LAC but agood one. More in line with Amherst and williams. But SF is league apart.

It is same as asking Harvard vs georgetown.
