I'm a prospective math/comp sci guy, so essentially what I have is that Harvard loves math and Stanford loves comp sci. I'm split. Do you guys have any reason I might choose one over the other? (before someone mentions weather, I am also a fan of snow... :P )

Stanford. 10char

depends. if you’re interested in pure math/theoretical comp sci (you want to do discrete math, proofs, etc) maybe harvard. if you’re more in the applied side of comp sci maybe stanford (not to say that you shouldn’t go here if you want theory too). stanford has a pretty established comp sci dept but harvard does have some up and coming stars in theirs. also, if you go to harvard you can take classes at mit.

Nowhere on this planet is better than Stanford in computer science.

Silicon Valley’s proximity to Stanford < that to Harvard

If you want a place in real life where you can apply computer science, then there’s really not many better places than Silicon Valley.

Hmm, the only problem is that I’m interested in both math and computer science. I know Stanford is a lovely computer science school, but Harvard is fantastic in math. Ah, decisions decisions. Well, I’m leaning towards comp sci, so maybe I’ll end up in Stanford

Also a lot of stanford love from a harvard board… :P

I’ll admit that Stanford is a sexy school… but Harvard… Hahvahd! Ohhh what a lovely place.

Definitely Stanford for CS

No shame in admitting that it’s superior.

You will study math with the IMO medalists if you go the Stanford this year.

<a href=“Stanford accepts only 7.6 percent of would-be freshmen – The Mercury News”>Stanford accepts only 7.6 percent of would-be freshmen – The Mercury News;

To reiterate… Stanford is hard to beat for CS. I personally don’t think anything beats it

I’m an alum of both places. If you haven’t visited them, go now. They are much different environments in which to live and study. The differences in the lifestyle and the feeling on campus are probably much greater than the academic issues you mention. As an undergrad, you won’t be testing the limits of the departments at either school. :)

If you want to do computer science, I’d definitely stick with Stanford, but as a pure mathematician, Harvard’s math department attracts me in a certain special way. There are lots of good schools for math, including Stanford, UChicago, Berkeley, MIT, Princeton…the list goes on. But Stanford, Berkeley and MIT are the key ones to choose among if you really want to do computer science as well, I think.

A lot of Stanford love on the Harvard board, huh? I wonder why all these Stanford folks frequent the Harvard board? I’ve never noticed Harvardians on the Stanford board. Perhaps there’s nothing over there that the Harvard crowd needs? :)

^I’m not a Stanford folk.

considering Stanford is pretty much heaven on earth, i would recommend it. haha

@ewho - Do you know the IMO medalists? If not, how do you know where they’ll end up?

@Shalashaska64
Why do you find Stanford superior? You can’t even write 10 characters explaining your opinion?

justforgetme, yes. They are telling everyone on the CC board, if you read carefully.

Coz it’s on a boat.

The only drawbacks are that the dorms are kinda shoddy in comparison to Harvard/MIT housing and that kyledavid gives it a bad rep.
