Is Stanford just as hard/harder than Ivy Leagues... how does it compare with Brown??

Harder in terms of admission? Courseload? It terms of prestige it certainly ranks with the top (HYP). I would say it also it beats Brown in all the factors as well.

Do you mean to get in? Or the actual classes...?

If you mean admissions, I think it's harder to get into Stanford than it is to get into Brown.

It's reputation is generally considered to be higher than that of Brown. As for difficulty, I'm really not sure.

Keep in mind that the Ivies are an athletic league; while all are prestigious, they vary significantly in that aspect.

I'd say Stanford is easily at the level of HYP. Above the mid-ivies (Brown, Columbia, Dartmouth).

I don't know if there's anyone here who can definitively compare them, since most likely none of us have taken courses at both schools in many departments and can compare their level of difficulty. My guess is that they're similar...

I meant admissions, but im interested in other comparisons too.

Well gee, y'all missed the most obvious difference....... California...

Stanford is one of the hardest schools to gain acceptance to based on acceptance rate only. Obviosuly, there are many other factors considered. Also, they only consider legacy in the early round which means non-legacy kids face a stiffer pool.

On that note, does anyone know a good college counselor (i.e. someone I can pay who is experienced) in the Cupertino, California area to help me with all of my college applications?

Thanks...

LoL chimee, if I had known that, I might not have applied early... luckily, it turned out fine.

Actually, that's not correct. Stanford takes legacy into account during regular decision as well.

I think that by "early round," chimee means that legacy is only a deciding factor earlier in the acception/rejection process rather than later.

However, if I remember correctly, if only one person can be accepted out of two similar students, then the legacy will be chosen (regardless of "rounds"). Unfortunate, but what can we do? :)

Stanford is much more prestigious than Brown and is on par with HYPM, hence the common contraction HYPSM.

I think you're right, pyleela. Legacy is treated as a "plus factor" that could decide between two similarly competitive candidates, presumably right up to the bitter end.

Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford and what's M??

MIT 10 char

Trying to order schools in the #5-#15 range of 3000 four years schools is pretty much a waste of time in my opinion ... Stanford anf Brown are both TERRIFC schools and you will be lucky if you have the chance to attend one or both if the schools. To me the more interesting discussion would be what are the differences between the schools (beyond the east coast / west coast location).

MIT.. isn't as hard to get into. well, i've always thought that..
my friend who graduated high school with me had low SAT scores, rejected by stanford, HYP, but got into MIT

but of course, that's just one example... i guess i could be wrong about MIT
