I am a native New Yorker who is deciding between two PhD programs. I hold a BA from a top ten American University and a master's degree from the London School of Economics (LSE). I have been admitted to PhD programs in Political Sociology at both Stanford and LSE. Which degree would be considered more prestigious throughout the world?

stanford in most cases. go there unless you badly want a city campus or a stint overseas.

well since u lived in london, u know the city so that shoudlnt be a problem. i’d personally go with stanford but lse is great as well. good luck!

For a prospective phd student that is a remarkably stupid question. You should be caring about your professors and supervisor; because its that what matters when it comes to phds, not university prestige (and FYI id say they were equal anyway)!

Subjectively, I would recommend Stanford to add variety since you already have a Master’s degree from LSE.

But, as Dionysus says, you should be more concerned about the environment you will be working in for your PhD (aka professors and resources).
