Stanford vs. Yale

I am JUST curious about which would you guys choose

easy question :P
Stanford for sure :)

to veerawudth :
would you tell SOME of the reasons?

which one would be a better choice for an undergraduate majoring in economics?

i wish i had that choice :)

I lived in New Haven for many years. I would choose Stanford any day. While I like the residential college system at Yale, my impression is that Stanford offers a more balanced life. Students seem happier at Stanford than they do at Yale (perhaps because of the weather or the California influence) and Stanford offers outstanding departments in every field. The sciences at Yale are placed far from the central campus (up science hill) which seems to isolate the science students from the non-science students. This is particularly difficult in the winter (going up science hill in the snow, sleet and rain). I have met many unhappy Yale students where I have yet to meet a Stanford student who wasn't delighted with their school. Good luck to you with your decision.

Stanford
- nice weather
- beautiful campus :)
- outstanding departments in almost every fields (as stated by the previous poster)
- Science and engineering departments at Stanford are one of the best in the world.
- Economics department at Stanford is better in my opinion. You can also take management classes in the Management Science and Engineering department.

Hope that helps! :)

You can't go wrong. You'll be very happy at either school. Both schools work hard to make both your academic and residential experiences great.

One thing that I wish I'd known when I was deciding between applying to Stanford or Yale SCEA... I loved the residential college system at Yale. I liked how it seemed it would create a strong sense of community, something that was important to me in a college. At least in the all frosh dorms, there is a very strong sense of community in the dorms at Stanford, too.

Stanford hands down! The atmosphere at Stanford is...brighter, happier, sunnier :)

I'm a parent and this thread caught my eye as my D was making this decision a couple of years ago. I would advise considering what it is you are seeking -- if you are science oriented versus humanities oriented, etc. For example, if you think you want to major in history, you might want to consider how strong Yale's history department is. Also, what do you want in terms of a life experience? You don't say where you are from, but if you are from the east coast, you might want to stay near home or you might be looking for a new experience -- same thing if you are from the West Coast. Going to college in a different environment from the one you grew up in can be a valuable experience or it can make the experience more overwhelming, depending on your personality. The culture at Yale is much different from the one at Stanford -- the East Coast Ivy League world is a different culture than the California one. Also, Yale is on the semester system and Stanford is on the quarter system -- do you have a preference? Keep in mind that going to school across the country (if you are from CA) is more complicated than going closer to home. You have less freedom to make last minute plans over vacation with friends if you booked a plane flight weeks ago. Moving, storage, transportation -- all are more complicated when you go to school far away. If you are from CA, you should know that CA is strongly represented at Yale -- second after New York I believe (at least two years ago it was.) Of course, CA is also very strongly represented at Stanford. Stanford has the California weather, but most people find the weather at Yale is just not the issue they thought it would be. My D was the type who thought anything below 70 degrees was cold and her body adapted to the different climate. I was very surprised at how well she adapted to the weather change. Good luck!

yale. but maybe that's because i want to be president haha. i still haven't heard from yale, but i was waitlisted to stanford. you really can't go wrong with the two though.

i wish i had that choice

agreed.

I have to second many of mimk6's wise observations. I faced the same choice last year. I had basically been planning on attending Yale for the last 18 months, and my entire life was headed in that direction. I was very much an East Coast baby. I decided, on a whim, to come to Stanford instead at the last minute.
I am personally happy I made that choice. Exposure to the California environment, atmosphere, and ethos have made me a more relaxed person, more comfortable with myself.
There have been times when I second-guess myself. Yale's culture of intellectualism is certainly more outgoing and explicit; the culture and tradition of the things like the YPU are much stronger; the value placed on institutional culture and history (at times quite recently constructed) is far greater. But from my conversations with plenty of Yale students and friends at Yale, 'tis not in truth a far more intellectual place than Stanford - anti-intellectualism, simplification, over-worldliness are just as present there.
I should also add as a side-note that Yale's admit weekend was not particularly representative in my mind - too alcohol filled. Stanford's more accurately represented the at times campy but truly happy (contented?) atmosphere that is the school.

I recommend visiting both schools at a time other than their admit weekend. Others may kill you for your dilemma, but I do not envy you - it is a choice that requires lots of consideration and soul searching... or a spontenous decision. Habe fortunam!

Thanks for your opinions!
If I have no clear idea of my major, which school is more suitable?

Stanford is more suitable
Stanford is very strong academically in almost every fields (social sciences, engineering, math, sciences,... u name it) :)

Stanford wins.

Stanford allows you more time than just about any school in picking your major - you're not forced to declare 'til winter of your junior year. To think that my freshman friends at Harvard are now picking their majors...

I think this clearly settles it:

Those were the only two schools I applied to. I'm at Stanford, it's better, trust me.
