Hopefully, they release official word by tomorrow.

What is the desired class size? 1700?

OREngineering:

I believe so. With 1,695 students already enrolled, that leaves little to no space for people on the waitlist.

Harvard has a yield rate of 82%, and Stanford has one of 77%. That suggests that there are not many applicants who are accepted at both schools.

1725 or so is the acceptable size. I think they will go to the waitlist but probably not more than 30 people.

There are usually a hundred or more that overlap between Harvard and Stanford. They are choosing one or the other or even another choice.

On CC we already heard from a couple who chose Stanford. OTOH, I personally have been talking to parents whose kids chose elite BS/MD programs over Stanford, Yale and Harvard, there is at least one student on CC who chose BS/MD in Texas over Stanford and I believe my pool is pretty small. I can only imagine what 500 students chose over Stanford and 400 chose over Harvard.

Just got this:

Dear SeaLegs,

Thank you for accepting your place on the Stanford waitlist. We had a very strong response to our initial offers of admission, and it is with regret that I write to let you know we will not be able to offer you a place in the incoming freshman class.

Thank you for the hard work and outstanding potential your application represents, and you have our very best wishes for your college education.

Sincerely,

Richard H. Shaw
Dean of Admission and Financial Aid

for the class of 2014, here is the cross-admit data:

359 accepted by Yale;
430 accepted by Princeton;
304 accepted by MIT;
630 accepted by UC Berkeley

I don’t know how much, if at all this changed in 2015/2016 classes

Got the same message as SeaLegs did. Looks like their goal was 1700.

thanks collegedad. Wonder how much those numbers changed since HP started SCEA.

Sorry sealegs. Wonder if they released all or a majority.

Nah…they released all! I think they’re trying to show off by not accepting a single waitlisted candidate in the last 2/3 years. Just got the email myself. Man this stings hard! Getting into the top 7% of all candidates but not top 5.8%. BS!
Anyway, Calbear for life now! Cal has better connections and a much better EECS program. Plus, they gave me a 100% scholarship.

Sealegs - I had my dates a bit off. As you see, I posted in that thread last year. But it does look like they got the 77% yield they needed to make a class of about 1700. I suspect it will end up that they don’t take anyone from the list this year again.

stanford78, unfortunately–for me at least–your prediction was amazingly prescient.

so the post that started this thread was clearly very wrong.

Got the same e-mail.

Same…oh well, UCHICAGO HERE I COME <3

collegedad2013 - the OP was ultimately right, but for all the wrong reasons and his information and admonition to other waitlisted students not to bother was way off - if not insidious.

Something else that’s interesting is that it appears, from what I can tell, that Stanford has taken no transfers into the class of 2016 (i.e. sophomores). Class size management is obviously very important.

P.S. My interest in all of this is that my DD was waitlisted last year and tossed in a transfer application this year. 0-2 but worth the try. Now she knows how the semi-finalists on those reality talent shows feel!

Anyone came off the wait list this year?

stanford78 - I believe last year’s class is one of the largest making it hard to find spots even if some leave.

However, I am curious how transfer decisions are made this early since the school only ends in mid June and it would need to depend purely based on students who dropped out by end of second quarter. Have they already said no?

Transfer decisions were send out in mid-May.

Waitlisted transfer over here. Took my spot at Columbia though.
