Stanford Warning Letter

So I got a warning letter from Stanford over the weekend and am terrified about them rescinding my admission. I got in EA and previously had all A's on my transcript. Last semester I ended up with 3 B's in my three hardest classes (all IB), but they were really close to A's (my school doesn't record B- or B+, just letters). I'm so horrified about this possibility. The worst part is my grades are the same this semester since I didn't think it would be a big deal, and my school year is almost over. Will Stanford rescind their admission offer if I get 3 B's again?

What specifically did the warning letter say? Can you call and clarify? I can’t believe 3 B’s would get you rescinded…

The first paragraph reads:
“We have reviewed your mid-year high school transcript, and I am writing to express a concern about your performance. Your grades are somewhat below the record presented in your application. I trust this performance is a one-time occurrence and that you have already taken steps to turn the situation around. We expect to see a return to your previous level of performance when we check your final grade report at the end of this term.”

Do you have any experiences/anecdotes with Stanford rescinding?

I would love to know this as well. I was just admitted, and am worried I may get two, possibly three B’s this semester (I got straight A’s this semester). Would my offer of admission be revoked? I’ll do my best to make sure that doesn’t happen but need to know in case

Whoa this is scary…I was just accepted rd but might get 1 or 2 Bs this final semester, what do you think Stanford would do to me?? I thought Bs were completely fine but I guess they have higher standards than other schools?

Hmm…I do not have experience with Stanford but the letter sounds serious…I’m surprised it came this far into second semester…when were your first semester grades sent? If you have April and May to rebound I would definitely meet with those three teachers and find out what you need to do to get A’s…I think this is imperative. It certainly can’t hurt to call to clarify…good luck!

That’s weird… I’ve never heard of any college sending warning letters for B’s, only C’s. However, just to be safe, if I were you, I would try to keep my grades up for second semester. Don’t want to get rescinded.

There have been other threads about Stanford sending warning letters when an A student becomes a B student. However, I’ve never heard of anyone being rescinded with B’s. Instead the rescinded persons I’ve heard about had multiple grades of C or lower (or non academic issues). I suspect Stanford is making it clear that they want you to take senior year seriously and not drop grades further to the point where you are likely to be rescinded. That said, I’d recommend trying to keep your grades up to the usual level, rather than assuming you’ll be fine to coast through senior year.

Anyone know if Stanford has lower standards for 2nd semester than 1st semester?

Stanford will not rescind for B’s, at least it’s never been done in the past. This warning letter is usually just sent to galvanize students so that they don’t do too poorly. As far as I know, and I’m 90% sure, it’s not a threat of being rescinded. Just don’t get C’s.

Take a look at these:

Edit: I don’t have the source on me, but I know Stanford only rescinds approximately 0.5% of it’s admitted class every year, that’s only around 5 people, and usually it’s because these students failed a required graduation course. In fact almost all of those students weren’t even rescinded, they were just forced to take a gap year basically.

update: I miraculously ended my semester with 5 A’s and one B in anatomy. I sent in my final transcript to Stanford late June so I’m assuming if they had any problem they would’ve contacted me by now. it was definitely one of the scariest moments of my life knowing that my place at stanford could be threatened, so don’t let loose in your classes

Thanks for the update-sounds like the warning letter was effective. Good job getting back on track.

Congratulations.

I’m glad you turned things around.

Though most schools do not rescind at B levels, things are changing very quickly in the world, the academic, select college world these days. Do keep in mind that there are many, many waitlisted students who are begging to get off that waitlist, sending new transcripts that show straight As and impressive achievements that last term senior year, and frankly, those who slack off then, why shouldn’t they get the boot when they’ve been slacker and those others who are now overall much better prospects would love to get those seats?

With things changing so quickly in terms of poiicies, it’s riskier than ever to go on former experiences. I’ve seen so many changes in the way things are done at colleges.
