Stanford + Yale EA chances/dilemma

Hi CC,

I was wondering, with my test scores of SAT I (660CR, 770M, and 780W) and ACT (32R, 33S, 35M, 36E), which are all the scores of tests I’ve taken thus far, would I be rejected from applying early to Stanford to them because of the extremely low CR score I got on the SAT I? I also have a 750 on chemistry and 800 math 2 subject test-wise. I’m just hesitant on applying to Stanford early if I have time in December to retake my SAT and improve my critical reading score, and possibly spend more time improving my essays.

On the other hand, Yale only requires all scores from either the SAT or the ACT, so I feel that only sending the ACT to them would be preferable. Also, for the Yale supplement, I feel a little more confident in them at this point (1 week before the deadline). So my final question is, should I go for Yale or Stanford? Stanford is my top choice, but the thing is, I want to maximize my chances of getting in there. Also, I’m not sure that if I told my counselor to send in transcripts to Yale instead of Stanford (where I told her I was going to apply early in the first place), they would get there in time.

I know this answer is really cliche, but it really depends on the other parts of your application. Sure, your CR is on the lower side, but if you have outstanding ECs, awards, or athletic ability, then your low CR would be balanced out. Also, keep in mind that Stanford is more selective than Yale, meaning that it is harder to get in regardless of when you apply.
Also, keep in mind that students applying EA are usually those who have already finished their SATs and are satisfied with their grades. Yes, EA admit rates may be higher, but the applicant pool is much more competitive. If you feel that you will not be able to showcase yourself best by the EA deadline, you should probably continue working on your application and apply Regular decision.
