hey guys...I hear that Stanford is one of the exclusive US colleges...but does that necessarily mean that it is a good school?? I never heard a school called Washington U in St Louis, but I hear really good things about that school (dorms, environment, majors, etc). However, I have never heard anything about Stanford. The only thing I heard that their dorms at night could be pretty unsafe, etc... So, tell me what is nice about Stanford. Compared to Washington U in St Louis, Cornell, etc. Is it better? What is it about Stanford that makes it a better/worse school than others?

i dont think this post deserves an answer

lol............

well..........

Ok peace_world. First, where do you live. Not to be offending but just want to know. and as the above poster, yea I would have to reply "lol..... well...."

If this is a joke, it was a nice try

Er, I hope you're an international. =)

You know Harvard, yes? Well Stanford's on par with Harvard. ;]

Stanford is neither better nor 'worse' than Cornell or Washington U StL, but it does have more recognition and prestige. I've never heard that Stanford's dorms are unsafe at night.

To many, Stanford's better in the non-academic areas, e.g. location (California=West Coast vs. New York=East Coast vs. Missouri=misery), weather (warm vs. cold vs. misery), environment (beautiful campus near Palo Alto vs. Ithaca vs. misery), etc.

[I hope this was a joke ...]

Harvard? What is that? WUSTL and Cornell are world famous. I've never heard of Harvard.

j/k

You never know. I'm amazed at how many people I can talk to who say "MIT? What's that?" Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "Is it good?" ... Are you serious? um, Yeah. "So where is it?" Um, Boston, you know, in Massachusetts?

Although granted it's specialized, I was pretty amazed at how many times this happened. However, I've never been asked where Stanford is. I guess it's easier to recognize a name (Stanford) than 3 letters (MIT). But maybe this kid lives somewhere where nobody has ever gone to Stanford or a big name school.

BTW: Stanford's dorms = safe.

I mentioned MIT to someone I know, and their response was 'MIT? Oh, that's the one in Madras, right?' It's quite easy to be parochial! ;)

Stanford's reasonably well-known where I live, although one still does get a few 'Stanford? What's that?' comments.

I'd say Stanford's pretty safe. First of all, I believe they have the campus police there. Second, the campus is huge. Third, the housing in Silicon Valley is so expensive that anyone would would be a threat to Stanford's safety would have to be from San Francisco. An finally, a thief/murderer/whatever you're thinking about would find difficulty not being seen/caught in a dorm full of college kids.

Stanford is known especially for having strong academics in just about every subject. A lot of the ivies have a greater liberal arts focus than stanford.

For some reasons these posts make me extremely mad...Probably cause as we sit here nervously waiting until April 1st, some other idiot likes to post junk on here to see the responses to his or her ridiculous post.

<--End Rant

Jake, that was an incredibly naive post. Have you ever heard of a place called East Palo Alto? There's a bit of crime there. And if your thesis is that high cost of living equals low crime, then there would be no crime in all of the bay area. I hate to break it to you, but housing isn't only expensive in silicon valley, but all over the bay area (including SF). And yes, there is crime on the stanford campus. There have been several armed robberies in the last year or so, not to metion your standard assault/theft/drug crimes.

East Palo Alto, however, is a ways from here. I'm not saying the campus is free of crime, but it feels like a very safe environment. Sure, there are cases of bike and laptop theft, but it's not like it happens everyday. Besides, I haven't heard about any armed robberies this academic year. And drug crimes? Which college campuses you know are drug free?

I'm not trying to say that Stanford is a dangerous place, because it's not. I'm just trying to show that Jake was way off base in his assumptions.

May 17, 2006

"For the second time in less than a week, a student was robbed at gunpoint on campus"

October 20, 2006

"Reports of campus sexual assault and relationship violence are on the rise, according to figures out of the Office of Judicial Affairs on this summer’s Judicial Panel hearings...The 2005 edition of the Stanford University Safety and Security Almanac indicates three reports of forcible rape and seven reports of forcible fondling in 2004."

October 24, 2006

"There are weekly reports of laptop theft. Are the laptops ever recovered? The University would say that the key to prevention is increased police presence. What bull...Two of my bikes have been stolen on this campus, both “registered,” never recovered...My freshman year, the Groper had his merry way with hundreds of our ladies. Never caught, despite a composite sketch which identified him as Hispanic."

All examples come from the stanford daily.

lol, I agree with mickley about the waiting till April 1st for the decision. It's killing me! Anyone heard from Stanford yet about anything? An interview?

Stanford doesn't offer interviews.

The stanford police is useless. All they do is give tickets to bikers without headlights and bikers who run the stop sign.

I'll admit it. When I was 16 years old or so, I had never heard of Stanford.

I also knew a girl who went to MIT and then went to work for Harley Davidson (the motorcyle company) in Milwaukee. She says that most people at Harley have never heard of MIT, thinking that it stood for something like the 'Milwaukee Institute of Technology'.

The truth is, the vast majority of people in the world don't know anything about colleges, and don't want to know. It's just not part of their dailiy lives.
