Stanford!

Hello! i have a few questions regarding Stanford admission system.
i know that they put a lot of weight into class rank and gpa.

which year’s gpa do they look at? it is an average of certain years, or?

how much does class rank affect it all? i go to a pretty rigourous school (ranked in the top 50 in the nation, and class rank pretty much screws all of us over)

& basically how much of an affect on admission will have if i am not in the top 10%, say i’m in the top 20%.

(i’m currently a sophomore in high school. there are usually 20ish valedictorians who have maintained a 4.0 all throughout high school and they all recieve a rank of 20, etc. so far, i’ve had 5 Bs out of 30 classes i have taken, so i am extremely worried)

Any information will be great!
Thanks.

please don’t give me remarks like your too young, don’t worry about it.

how have you taken 30 classes, and you're a sophomore? They look at GPA every year...it's Stanford, although junior and sophomore year are most important. if you're only in the top 20%, you will not get in unless you have done something truly magnificent extracurricular-wise. however, it sounds like your school doesn't weight AP or honors classes, so if that's the case, then disregard my last point. Stanford adcom's know which high schools are good, so that point may help you also. It's kind of a crapshoot though.

How could you have taken 30 classes as a sophomore? That's more than 8 a semester, in a few cases.

Honestly, rank matters more than you think. Here is how I believe Stanford, along with many other top colleges look at it.

Rank > GPA > Test Scores

But don't worry too much. Just try your best and get as many A's as possible. However, the biggest factor in the Stanford Admissions process is:

ESSAYS!! I am not joking with you. You're essays are the key to your admission. Since everyone applying to Stanford has good grades and test scores, that will not help you at all. Therefore, you have to amaze them with your essays.

oh i;m counting semester classes. and i did the math wrong (explains my Bs in math) it's suppose to be out of 18 classes. so i guess you can say so far semester wise i got 5 Bs and 13 As.
sorry. =/

& our school does weigh! but the ranking isn't weighted.

I don't think rank will be terribly important in this case. Stanford will see that your school is rigorous.

Stanford will see your grades from freshman year, but they will not factor them in while considering your GPA.

anyone else?

Stanford has some of the toughest to figure admissions in the US. They are looking for stars--not just grades. People who accomplish things outside of class too and I'm not talking some drippy club ECs.
