Stanford

Just wondering how many people are waiting to hear from Stanford next month. I'm hoping to spark up some chatter amongst us in the meantime so we can all help eachother keep our sanity. :)

Just to start things off:

1) Where are you all transferring from?
2) What major?
3) Why do you all want to leave your current schools?
4) Why did you choose Stanford as a potential school for next year?
5) What other schools did you apply to?

Hm. I guess I'll answer my own questions then.

1) Juilliard

2) switching from violin performance to psychology/social sciences/biology

3) my goals in life have become more clear to me in the past few months

4) It has one of the best undergrad psychology and social science departments that I know of, it has a good atmosphere over-all, its geographical location is convenient (for contact reasons), diversity, the violin faculty is pretty awesome (St. Lawrence String Quartet), weather. Just everything together makes it perfect.

5) I'm waiting to hear from U Penn and Northwestern (and maybe Oberlin?)

de anza college
philosophy
it's a CC
because i need to be pampered, you're very free to engage in anything of interest there, and has a bangin' phil department
ivy leagues and ucs

Chabot College
Economics/Business
it's a CC
Excellent school that is close to home
UCB, UCLA, USC, Northwestern, Emory, NYU, and more

cmu
cognative science here, symbolic systems there
entirely cs driven students and courses (no humanities), too career focused, quality of life issues
the only school that offers and is equal or better for my major
none

and I would like to add transfer year to this list:
sophomore transfer

helloangel, how does that work? do you have any acedemic credits, I wouldnt think music stuff would be enough to qualify as a transfer. Wouldnt you be there 4 years to take all the courses required for the major?

_42, I originally applied as a freshman, but Stanford contacted me telling me I needed to apply as a transfer instead.

I was confused about this as well. However, I still have various college credits that I took in high school as well as a Humanities course I had to take this year. I also plan on taking classes in the summer and/or through correspondance (if available) to catch up.

1) Simon's Rock College

2) Mathematics

3) It's very small, course offerings get very slim when you're an upperclassmen, it's fairly common to transfer from here after 2 years, almost all of my friends are transferring too.

4) Because Stanford is an amazing, wonderful, perfect college, of course! :-D Plus they have a truly awesome program in a specific mathematics-y area I want to study.

5) Gah! A lot. Stanford is mostly my first choice though. I don't want to list all the others because I'm afraid I might be a little too recognizable!

what is this recognizable thing? I have seen several people say stuff like that, you dont want the ad coms to recognize your posting name?

If I'm applying to some slightly lower college than Stanford and Yale, but still first-rate-- say my 3rd choice-- then if they know my first choice is Stanford or Yale, then they'll be less likely to accept me. However, as chances are pretty damn low that I'll get into either, then it's certainly in my best interest to be accepted by my 3rd choice, as that's where I'd likely go.

Edit: kinda interesting that we can say "damn", but not "s t f u"

_42--sorry for my ignorance, but what exactly are "ad coms"?

anisky--how would the colleges be able to find out about you on this board? do they actually go around looking for applicants who have other first choices? :/ either way, I can see where you are coming from over-all.

admissions committees-the people who review your application, those people one prays to every night

there actually some who are registered members so there is definitely some reading of this board, I cant see them actually matching up your info though

I really overlooked stanford as a place to apply -- I thought they didn't have the programs I'm looking for, but it turns out they do. I love the school, and especially the area.

I don't htink they have a habit of takign late applictions, but do you guys think that if I sent one in, they might read it?

They might. There are very, very few Simon's Rock Math majors who are applying to transfer. And I make my interest in that "specific branch" of mathish-yet-not-math very clear...

make sure you enclose 70 bucks with your app :-)

How hard is stanford to transfer into. Give me a percentage or a comparison (e.g. like transferring ot Yale or like transferring to Brown, etc (Yale = impossible Brown = not too difficult)

(Much) closer to Yale than to Brown, but easier than Yale. (~8% admissions rate, as compared to ~4% of Yale and ~20% of Brown.)

K, thank you very much

Btw, brown is like 30 (does happy dance....) though I have a feeling its gonna change this year

Yeah, I didn't apply to Brown, so I'm more sure of the Yale (actually 3.7%) and Stanford stats than I was the Brown.

ClaySoul -- the Stanford transfer deadline was almost two months ago. at that, I'm not sure it'd be worth it to send the application this late because the competition is already very keen. the lateness won't help at all. I hate to be discouraging, I just don't want you to waste your time and money. are you a junior or sophomore transfer? if you're the later, you can thoroughly prepare to apply for next year.

then again, if you're willing to sacrifice the time and money for any outcome (who knows, it may be good despite,) then by all means, do! :)

one month. see calendar. this is the year in which I am applying to transfer. I will not be able to do so next year, because presumably, I'll be at a new school of somekind!
