<p>I think they originally were the “Indians” but that is no longer used for obvious reasons. My understanding is that Stanford “Cardinal’” refers to the color (red), not the bird (or Pope’s helpers); for example, while it is proper to say “Go Cardinal” you do not say “Go Cardinals.” I do think “Trees” is sometimes used for fun. If you look up their band on Youtube, you will see the mascot is a tree.</p>
