Stanford's Focus

hey guys im kinda new to the stanford board so sry if this question has been asked before.

What is the main focus of Stanford's application process, are they extremely into GPA's and perfect SAT's, or are they looking for ECs and etc?

Contact the admissions office at Stanford to find out. I believe that everything in your appilcation has to be strong. In my case, my academic credentials are decent. But they are no where near the perfection that most students have when they apply. I'm a small fish in a large and strong applicant pile of students who could blow my acheivements out of the water. But you have to follow your gut instincts. If it tells you to apply to Stanford, do it.

Stanford tends to look at EC's and essays more than HYP, but if you compare their SAT range and and so on, it does not mean the "numerical" part of your application is looked at LESS.

academic record needs to be strong..but they are honestly looking for personality. they're looking for someone who stands out from the crowd..it can be standing out through passion, sports or even stellar grades. but keep in mind - they need to have a reason to admit you -you have to be that unique slice that'll fit together to create the perfect pie of 2010. regardless of metaphors, you get what I mean?

I talked with an admission officer. He sais that they first look at your performance in high school. That's where everything starts. However, he emphasized that the essays are really important.

I think my essays were a huge factor to my acceptance.

same here..

essays/recs

1- Academic record: to show that you can succeed at Stanford.
2- Essay: very important; shows uniqueness/personality
3- Recs: self-explanatory.

Your grades and course-load show that you are a competitive applicant. Since most students applying to Stanford are academically strong, it really comes down to essays and recs.

Essays are definitely a strong factor. I think my essays made up for my less than perfect SAT's, judging from my SCEA acceptance.

Yeah i had 1400 SAT M/V, 2150 otherwise, but I had strong EC's and recs and really strong essays.

4500 or so SCEA applicants
2500 had 4.0 GPA's
so you can imagine how far grades will get you in setting you apart from the rest of the applicant poll

just knock em dead on your essays. it'll likely to increase your chances exponentially.
