Stanford's "Intellectually Engaging" essay

So, I'm working on my essays for Stanford right now and I've been thinking about the 'Intellectually Engaging Idea' topic. I'm not too sure what qualifies as intellectually engaging, so I started looking online.

What I've seen is a lot of 'What's my role in life?' but I don't want to do that.

I have an idea in mind but I'm not sure about it so I was hoping for some feedback.

I've grown up in a house of Wiccans and been Wiccan most of my life. I just started reading the Bible last year and saved myself. There are a few things (Actually, a lot of things) that I've read this past year that really make me think A LOT and that I might call intellectually engaging but I'm not sure if they'd be considered intellectual to others?

For example, evolution as it relates to Genesis.
And another is the miracle of the loaves and the fish. (How I see it as opposed to how others see it)

In order to understand What I mean, you'd have to read the essay, but from what I've given you, do you think this would be a fitting essay?

Also, if you'd like to read what I've got written, just ask. :)

Thanks in advance,
Melani

IMO, those ideas would definitely be considered “intellectually challenging.” I don’t think the essay prompt is as narrow as many construe it to be–I’ve heard that you can talk almost about anything, as long as you speak in a clear voice and provide a thoughtful and obviously intellectual response.

That sort of made me cringe. Agh. I’m not sure how you presented your idea in the essay, but I think you should be very, very, very careful with this topic. Present it more as you becoming independent than choosing the “right” thing. If the right thing, then the right thing for you.

I think it’d be very easy to come off as arrogant, even though you probably aren’t. In revising, you should be very critical of your character as presented by this essay.

I’m willing to read it and tell you what I think of the tone and how you come off, but I’m also applying to colleges this year. I’m applying ED Smith, and if I don’t get in, normal decision to similar schools (though none like Stanford). I’ve already written my essay.

If you’re interested, just PM me. It sounds like an interesting topic.

PS: When I was twelve I wanted more than anything to grow up in a family of Wiccans, ahahaha. Currently agnostic, though nevertheless your family situation/development as a person is really interesting because of how foreign it is to most people, I think. Best of luck~
