STAR Scholars Program

Anyone have any experiences with this program? I just received a letter today that I was accepted into the program. It sounds really cool... summer research internship that pays $4,000 ($10/hr for 10 weeks) for the summer and provides free housing in Philly.

anyone?

I haven't done this but I have a few friends who had and all of them liked it. Its something to put on your resume and a cool way to do research and of course stay in philly and get paid during the summer. (way more cool than something like an orientation leader where you get free housing in the summer i think) they'll put you in suite style dorms, i think its north with other STAR Scholars and you'll probably make a lot of friends. I'm not exactly sure how you pick who you do your research for, but make sure its something you're really interested in!

I'm not sure where Zack got the suite style dorm theory from...last year S.T.A.R. students stayed in Myers (a traditional style freshmen dorm) and the dorm you stay in changes every year. We won't find out where are until April.

I've heard good and bad experiences. You just have to find a project you're passionate about. Don't settle. You don't necessarily have to find a project in your major either.

I'm currently a S.T.A.R. scholar, and I know a few from prior years. S.T.A.R. also gives you all the benefits of the honors college.

I alos got an invitation for this program, it says that I need to apply before entering the college. Can you apply after the summer orientation, some time in September? How will be the work load during the entire year in honors college? Any suggestions?

I just got the invitation for this.

what project will you be working on? Can you tell me what some of the projects other students you knew worked on?

Is both room and food free? Or just the room? If just room, approx. what is the cost of food -do they still offer a meal plan or are you "on your own?"

I rec'd invitations to both programs.

Is it possible to do STAR w/o being in the honrors program?

I know this sounds weird, but I'm not so sure I want to live in the "honors" dorms. But it is an honor to have been selected for the honors program-- and the benefits sound pretty good, esp. early reg for classes, etc.

I'm a third year here, so here's my take on things:

STAR actually used to be in North...at least it was my freshman year. I'm sure they probably move it around a bit. Drexel tries to keep you in the same room that you were in during the spring quarter, that way, you won't have to move.

And I think you have to be a member of the honors program- but you don't have to live in honors dorming I believe if you do not want to- you can always just pick regular. I think I was given an option of living whereever I wanted when I was filing out my housing application.

They do offer a meal plan, but it's better to be on your own I've noticed- the meal plan tends to be more expensive then cooking/eating out yourself, especially with so many cheap eating options in Philadelphia. I didn't like the meal plan, and a lot of my friends didn't like it either.

Workload in the honors college isn't bad- in fact, I don't think I've done anything extra for the honors program- that usually only applies to students who want to graduate with honors, etc. The perks, especially picking classes earlier, is definitely worth it- classes fill up quite quickly.

cutiepie- thanks again for your input. DId you particpate in the STAR program? If so, what research/project did you work on?
