Starbucks Pays for College Education for all Employees

Starbucks announced late Sunday it will pay for thousands of its workers to take courses through Arizona State University to complete their bachelor's degree.

The Starbucks College Achievement plan will let full- and part-time workers choose from 40 undergraduate degree programs at ASU that will be delivered online. 135,000 employees are eligible.

Great!

so, is ASU charging instate rates to all of these employees/

ASU Online Programs. There are 40 undergraduate degrees listed, so I am guessing any undergraduate on-line program is available.

I wonder if other univs will strike affordable deals with large employers? Seems like a win/win…money flowing in for online classes…and employees getting educated.

This is a Starbucks benefit that really makes a difference. They offer health insurance, but it pretty much costs an employee his/her entire paycheck (know some employees who work there for the benefits). The addition of college courses is a huge bonus.

Something else to point out – this offer is supposedly only offered to employees at corporate-owned Starbucks.

ASU is a for profit school, I expect Starbucks has made some sort of deal.
If they really wanted to help employees, they wouldn’t limit reimbursement to one for profit university.

Emerald…ASU is not a for profit university. Pearson, the group that runs the online courses is for profit.

There is a difference.

Right, but they are anticipating using these online student dollars to help with on campus costs.

This report is from 3 years ago. Online universities seem to have taken off quite a bit within the past few years so I would be interested in knowing how ASU Online compares to other major universities with online divisions.

One big question is how a Starbucks/ASU online degree is going to be regarded by prospective employers.

More info. Starbucks isn’t paying anything. They negotiated a discount.
