Starting a Club--College Admissions

I had originally posted this in the college admissions forum, but I wanted to post it here since I thought that many of you, as parents, have watched your children do things like this and could provide a different perspective, and hopefully a very helpful one =)

I was looking in to starting a Model UN club at my school. Is this something that looks good on a college application? I am very interested in the subject matter, so it wouldn't be something I was doing solely for the purpose of putting it on a college application. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with starting a club? Is it something that I want to pursue, or is it so time consuming that I would be better off pursuing that interest in another manner? Any advice would be appreciated, especially if it related directly to MUN.

The UN is a clueless chowder society where overpaid people do nothing.

I wasn’t asking for your opinion on the UN. I was asking for your opinion on MUN, which is a great opportunity for students to learn about foreign cultures and international affairs, regardless of how effective the actual United Nations is.

Model UN is a great club and if you start it and provide successful leadership for it then, yes - it will look good on your college application. Demonstrating leadership is the key.
If you have a strong interest - you may have the option to continue Model UN in college.

Thanks for the response! Any tips as to how to get started? Do you have experience with a child of yours starting a club? If so, any tips?

The first thing you need need for any high school club is a faculty sponsor. You also usually need a minimum number of interested participants, and then you fill out the paperwork in the office. Step one is to start approaching social studies teachers with the idea and see if anyone is interested in sponsoring the group. If yes, they’ll help direct you from there, and if no, you’re DOA.
