Ok guys im planning on strating a club this yr. the problem is the school has a new messed up rule that basically requires each officer to throw in money. so im thinking about creating the club, but making it NOT school affliated.

would this look really bad? because technically, anyone can form a "group"???

Well anyone can form a school group too. It doesn’t matter as long as there is proof of its existence and activities, since it’s harder to track and monitor a non-school group. You just have to have enough newspaper articles about you guys and etc. to make it clear you aren’t just trying to pull a fast one come application time

i think if you can make the club on a community-wide level, that looks even better than just forming a club on a school level. like try recruiting members from schools all over your district and maybe even beyond. find an open public place for meetings, like the park or library or city hall.

facebook groups tend to work wonders in terms of raising awareness and getting more members=)

Definately do Facebook groups. My Key Club started doing FB groups last year and it was amazing. It’s easier to reach people and remind them of stuff. And a lot of people will join if your school is big. Also find a teacher that can be an advisor too.

you guys arnt answring the question! the question is asking about the validity of non-school affliated clubs.

hannahmontana, are you referring to other schools only or to comunity members in general ( like adults and old ppl)? my school is the only one in the district

i am starting a club outside of school..for where i live it is fine..as long as you have a adult sponsor, and it is official so if anyone checks on it, you have proof..

I did try answering your question. I feel if you can make a big enough impact of some sort on your community through your out-of-school club, it probably means a lot more and is far more valid than an in-school club.

and sry, i didn’t realize your district only had one hs. our school district has several high schools so to make a club that included members from each of the 7 high schools would probably be quite an achievement. in your case, maybe try getting members from other local area high schools. i don’t know if you’d want older, adult members, depends on the nature of your club i guess.

for example, if you’re starting a knitting club, then probably getting members from every age spectrum would be good. on your app, you could be like “founder and president of Knitting Club, recruited X (let’s say 40) members from local community, ages 14-93, to come meet every Friday for an hour in the local library meeting room. The purpose of the club is to reach across generation and cultural boundaries to unite the community through the creative process of knitting. We also hold open conversations on community issues like diversity, education, involving senior citizens in the community, etc.”

haha something like that, but probably not so cheesy. on the other hand if you’re trying to start something like FBLA or DECA or Science Club or Math Club where everyone preps for the AMC outside of school…basically a club that involves some kind of competition or test in the end…you could probably just gather a bunch of high schoolers from your community, meet at the libraries to train and practice or whatever, and then register and attend competitions by yourselves. you’d probably need an advisor of some kind. if you can’t get a teacher b/c of the rules at your school, ask a parent or family friend or something with experience in that subject who might be willing to help.

I suppose if you did this, it would be more legit if you could train your club enough to actually do well in competitions and then you could talk about how you founded the team and organized meetings outside of school, etc. that would prove you actually did something of value i suppose rather than just forming “a group” as you put it.

so yeah, i guess it comes down to what kind of club you want to start. mind if i ask you what your idea for this club is?
