Starting a Medical club in hs

Hi.. can anyone give me any tips on starting a medical club? Like what activites should we do? should I have any fieldtrips? any tips would make me Happy !! :] thanks

bump :/ i hate bumping

yea.. i was thinking that too. I wanta start some sort of a business club or something. IDK what types of activites we would do though... Read the business articles in newspapers? Read WSJ?? Seems boring. need some real activites to do!

for business.. i think that you can invite speakers over that have done stuff.. maybe organize internship opportunities?

Any help regarding my question? pretty please :D

For business, maybe you can have fake stocks and learn how to invest wisely? You know, everyone starts out with x amount of money, and they can invest however they want, and they have to keep track of their stocks on a daily basis.

I have a feeling that it's a little harder to start a medical club in high school because your access is limited. Can you do field trips to shadow doctors or see surgical operations performed? You could invite guest speakers (but I suppose that gets old). Maybe you can ask club members to bring in articles about current medical issues and discuss them at meetings. You can also do book readings. I read a fantastic nonfiction book about one surgical resident's take on what it means to be a surgeon and the issues that surgeons must face.

I have a suggestion. When you form a club, please hold regular meetings and don't do it just for college. In my school last year, some seniors formed a medical interest group that died out after college apps were done. Even up to that point, the club wasn't great. So again, don't give up on the club once ur in college (if you're a senior). If you're not a senior, ignore my suggestion about the apps thing, but still try to follow the suggestion on having regular meetings.

HOSA? Volunteer at the hospital? Get doctors to speak about certain medical issues/anomalies/anything interesting?

thanks guys!! anyone else!! hugs

hey this sounds like a really good idea!!
ndinchick, please keep me posted on how the club thing is going--i might borrow the idea for my school....i know there actually are a lot of kids interested in medicine in my school.

but GREAT IDEA!!

HOSA? umm could you clarify what HOSA is? thanks :]

thanks so much for the opinions :]

Some kid in my high school just start a medical club. Honestly, I think he's doing it just for the sake of saying he started a club. I only say this because he joined fifty billion clubs that have nothing to do with medicine. In fact, I don't even think he wants to go into the medical field. That said, I did ask him what he was planning to do, and he said he's going to invite some guest speakers and try to get some kids in the club to do some research.

Good luck with your club.

omigosh ndinchick, thanks for this thread so much. me and my friends have basically been thinking about this since freshman year (we're juniors now), and it's interesting how our school has a club for EVERYTHING except for medical-related professions.

EXCEPT our school doesn't let us turn in proposal forms until the end of the year /=

Notice how so many people on this thread are Indian. You can tell because of their usernames.

I'm Indian too. I like biology, but I would rather do biology (as in PhD route) than medicine. Not sure yet, though.

For a medical club, invite speakers, discuss important news (and possibly papers from journals), hold formal debates, encourage research, and stuff like that.

ahaha yup I am indian... very obvious..
glad you like the thread guys.. I LOVE your ideas so far and think they are awesome..
one question though: do you think an UCs or other universities in the LA area that will be willing to let be take hospital tours? has anyone does this?

thank you
