Several dilemmas. I like Astronomy, so I really want to start an Astronomy club. There are 2 problems, however:
1. I don't think there are enough people to start the club.
2. What will I do with the club? ._. What do other school's Astronomy club do?

So because of those problems, I may want to start a math competition club instead, but also with issues:
1. This is a common thing for extracurricular activities, especially because I'm Asian.
2. Which competitions are available (cannot be ones that include MVC or higher level math). Also, that do math clubs at other schools generally do? If I do start one I would name it Mu Alpha Theta club.

A third option is to combine the two, but I have no clue lol. I could also start them as two separate clubs, but I don't know if I can even do that (this is, however, the ideal thing to do). If I were to combine them, how would I organize them and how would I name it?

well, for one don’t create the club just to put it on as an extracurricular for colleges, technically I also created a math club but I never talked about it on applications because we only had a few events and it wasn’t really a big deal.

So if you really want to do this get a sponsor, obviously. I could see the astronomy club as a subsection of math club (at my school MUN and chess and UNICEF are subsections of the history club). Less work in paper work for funding really. At my school math club had a math relay annually and open tutoring by members, mainly it was for the cool shirts we could only get if we had a club. I could see an astronomy club going to planetariums, studying constellations maybe and then going out camping in the middle of nowhere? Bottle rockets? I don’t know, why do you want to create the astronomy club? Like, what was the goal of it?

I’m technically president of the physics/engineering club and we would go bowling during school (sponsor took care of it all) twice a year…to…learn physics. We are cool. Also bottle rockets and building a boat out of cardboard and ducttape and having contests with other schools on whose was fastest/didn’t sink soonest. Lot of fun. I don’t think I put that on my application either, because I guess a lot of my time wasn’t at that club since it was so small.

Although having a club on my app is an incentive, that’s not my only goal. I want to major in Astronomy and I have a passion for math (my school already has a math tutoring club. As implied, the club cabinet is full of ******* of don’t actually like math and only care about tutor for CSL hours and have on their transcript that they were a cabinet member of a club). I won’t start a club without being intrinsically motivated to do so.

That aside, my school’s club doesn’t have “sections.” In another words, the history club is seriously just about talking about history. So if I were to combine the two ideas, it’s quite difficult. If I emphasize too much on Astronomy, it’ll scare away people who don’t like astronomy.

So do you have suggestion for weekly activities for a math competition club? For an astronomy club?

I’ve just found out that Mu Alpha Theta is a “National Honors Math Society.”

For those who are familiar with it:
1 How to organize a MAT club?
2) What are the activities/competitions? How to join those competitions?
