Starting a new language at Harvard

How hard would it be for me to start Chinese 101 at Harvard with a lot of other classes/interests? Would it be a huge time commitment and would it be a difficult course for me? I have basic oral fluency, but I know around 20 characters.

I think there are quite a bit of people who do this. It would be interesting to study Chinese.

I think this is fairly common, especially with Chinese, so I think it's doable

If you have basic oral fluency, you might want to think about the accelerated introductory course. If all you're really learning is the characters, you could probably keep up easily. It's offered in both the spring and fall. I believe this is what many native speakers (or those with a strong high school background) do.

Thanks a lot Hanna. I just looked it up on Harvard's course offerings and it's perfect. Now I just have to get in...

Harvard also has a state of the art language lab. :)

I'm sick of Spanish :(. Chinese sounds good.

haha. i love Spanish. I'd like to take French and/or continue my Japanese studies. And I hear the JP dept is superb.

My daughter started Latin at Harvard. It was intense, but it worked out okay.

if you wouldnt mind not getting credit for a course in chinese, you can just audit a class.
