Starting a new language in the middle of High School

Hello everyone, I am having a tough decision regarding my language for the next two years. So, my situation is pretty complicated…I am a Chinese-American and I just finished Chinese 3 and tried to enroll in AP Chinese through a placement test. I did pretty bad, but my teacher’s giving me another chance to take it near the end of summer. Most of my friends passed the test and I dont want to be the one left behind… However, I was thinking about starting Spanish next year as my third language and self studying for the Chinese AP test. This way it doesnt seem like im slacking by taking my native language, but I was wondering if this was a good idea or not?

Please post any opinions or suggestions you have,
Thanks in advance

Interesting, I’m also Chinese American and am bilingual in English and Spanish but thinking about studying Chinese as a third language. I believe it will be difficult to study two langauges concurrently, but learning Spanish comes innately for me. It is not my first language, but it is very similar to English and easy to pick up if you decide to take it.

In a nutshell: Colleges want to see that you continue with the same foreign language all throughout high school so I recommend you stay with Chinese. Good luck!
