Can any current students shed some insight into how difficult it is starting a new language at Duke? I've been taking French since 7th grade. I'm mediocre at it, and I absolutely hate it. I was thinking about taking Italian or Portuguese, but many have suggested that I stick with what I already have a foundation in, so I can spend more time on classes necessary for my major (computer science or some kind of engineering). In all honesty, I think my previous years of French will only be an asset at the very beginning since the class was kind of a joke at my school. Hence, a bit of confusion as to whether I should bother sticking with it or try something new. Any thoughts?

My D took French in high school, but switched to Italian at Duke. FWIW, she enjoyed the Italian more than the French. So, based on her experience, it’s doable.
