Starting a Technology Committee at my school

Okay, for a disclaimer, there was a technology committee that lasted one year last year to provide chromebooks for our school. It got disbanded last year because they found no purpose in it after the chromebook situation. But after hearing about that, I realized that a technology committee would actually be very important to our school. So I have a list of things that I want to do here:

  • All additional Chromebook needs (including replacing them, fixing them, etc.)
  • Organizing school-related technology events (such as FTC Competitions)

I don’t have too much, but it would be great if anyone can make any suggestions/changes to my proposals.

I would start by finding out who the staff person is in charge of chromebooks. At our school we have a staff person who is the director of instructional media who is technically the go to person for chromebook things. Find out what is already being done and brainstorm what still needs to be done and how students can help.

Some ideas if your school doesn’t already do them:
1 look into some students getting trained to help with common issues to help at certain times - perhaps in the library
(my school has a training program and students get elective credit)

2 designated people to teach chromebook/google to new students unfamiliar with it who transfer in at times besides the start of a school year

3 help determine best insurance to use for chromebooks

4 schools can block sites - maybe a committee to help determine what to block or not block - iniitally youtube was blocked by our school but teachers complained because they wanted to use it to show an occasional educational video

5 as a student committee - you can try selling things like waterproof bags and chromebook stickers to raise a little bit of money

6 look into grant funding to help pay for more chromebooks

7 look for innovative ways to utilize chromebooks in education then get the information out to teachers who might benefit or to clubs etc.

8 if you have state testing that can be done on a chromebook see if the chromebooks have what they need

I agree…work with the staff person who is in charge of it. i am sure they have ideas of things they would like to do but don’t have time for.
