Starting Amnesty Club

My school is only a year old and we still don't have many clubs, so I am very interested in starting our School's Amnesty International Club. I know that I need an advisor, mission statement, registration, etc., but I was wondering if anyone that's already in the club or knows about it could help me?

What kind of activities and fundraisers does the club do? And scheduling and keeping members interested?

Any help is appreciated. =]

How many people go to your school?

Quite a lot, about 1600-1800 I think.

That's just about how many students there are at my school. I'd love to give you some advice--I was a co-President for my school's Amnesty branch this past year.

Some of the things we did:
-an informational meeting for all interested students. Advertise this well around school, in announcements, on posters, by mouth to maximize interested members.
-showing movies like Hotel Rwanda and Daughters of Afghanistan, which Amnesty recommends for viewing, and holding discussions on them afterwards
-having guest speakers come on various topics, ie the recent genocide in Rwanda
-tabling at lunches, getting people to sign petitions in favor of human rights
-National Week of Student Action--a bunch of activities for this one, including a Day of Silence

You should check out amnestyusa.org for info on planning and setting up a group. You can also register your group online. PM me or let me know if you want to know more.

Your school is only a year old and it has 1800 kids?!

What's your school?

Our district was very overcrowded so they moved a bunch kids from grades 9-11 from 3 different schools.
