Anyone know what the requirements are to gain sophomore standing at UMN? I would have 31 credits coming in from AP's.

At other Us, if you have APs but have never been a full-time student, you enter as a freshman with upperclass standing. My S entered USoCal with many of his friends; most of them had 30-the max of 60 credits from all their APs and other courses. They were still considered freshmen but allowed priority in registration due to their many AP credits.

Sorry, don’t know specifically how UMN deals with the issue, but all the Us S was accepted at would have handled him the same way (tho some would not have capped him at 60 credits, since he actually earned more than that).

Which colleges can i start as a sophomore?

[Registration timing FAQ](http://onestop.umn.edu/registration/prepare/times/timing_faq.html#5)

Looks like 30 is enough. The big question is whether AP credits contribute to that standing. It isn’t stated clearly here or in the AP credit page. They don’t specifically exclude it there, as some schools do, but it may be buried in a policy somewhere. I forgot to ask about that when we visited. What I do remember is that honors kids do not receive any scheduling priority at UMN. So you would need the class standing from AP to get any priority.

I recommend you e-mail or call them

When you find out, post back here so others will know.

DS was informed during his honors advising meeting, he would be registering earlier for Spring semester due to his AP credits. He has sophomore standing.

For the current semester, he had no issues with scheduling classes. He got into every class he wanted and at the time he wanted. The honors advising was great and helpful! This took place during orientation but we tried to attend the earliest one we could.

Don’t believe AP credits helps with the initial registering of classes for the first semester but it applies toward the next semester and so on.

The answer to that question depends on your academic record and what you mean by “start as a sophomore” and might be better answered in a new thread rather than in this old one.
