Starting at a CC this year.. Don't know what classes I should take!

Hi! I’m an internation student starting at a community college in California this fall, and it starts in about 2 weeks. I still don’t know if I want to go to a UC or a CSU. My majo is human services generalist, because I want to be a social worker in the future, but sociology creds transfer to UCs, and human services creds transfer to only CSUs. I dont know what courses I should take, or even if I should change my major last minute. I’m even thinking about transferring to a uni that’s out-of-state, but I’m not sure yet.
Can anyone tell me which courses I should take in my first semester? And also if I should go to a UC, CSU, or a out of state uni. They all have different course requirements, which is why I can’t decide.
Thanks to anyone that helps!!!

You should make a counseling appointment to speak to an academic counselor.

If they all have different course requirements, I would recommend completing general education requirements and the courses that overlap the universities you want to apply to until you’ve narrowed your choices down (especially the courses that are required for transferring).

You’ll need to take English and Math placement tests first. Once you’re placed, start with those and one or two more GE courses. Most CA CCs have an orientation for new students which describes the Associates degree programs as well as the transfer process to CSU and UC schools.

For social work, you’re looking at a future Masters in Social Work degree so you’ll have to factor those costs in too.

You can use http://www.assist.org to check which courses you need for each major at each UC and CSU.

Note that some of the major prerequisites can also fulfill general education requirements. E.g. sociology courses can count as social science courses for breadth requirements or IGETC. The IGETC pattern is accepted in place of each campus’ breadth requirements for most (but not all) majors at UCs and CSUs. So you may want to look at completing the IGETC pattern, choosing major prerequisites when a given IGETC category includes them.

Go to assist.org

  • Type in your community college
  • Type in your desired university to transfer to
  • Pick a Major

It will give you all or most of the pre-reqs needed for transfer, although you should still visit your counselor.

CSU’s will require a communication class (public speaking) and the UC’s will require foreign language classes, which can be satisfied in High School.
