Starting Early

Sorry, I'm making multiple threads.
Okay, so I want to transfer to a UC after one year at a community college, but I'm a HS senior right now. Is it possible to start early? Like this quarter or from summer?

I'm interested in Communications and transferring to UCLA (hopefully in a year, aghh). I went to assist.org and got some classes, but I don't think those are GE's. I got classes like Intro to Communications, Integral Calculus, Microecon Theory, etc. But how do I figure out the GE's I need to take so I can get ahead? Is it possible to start this early and have the units I take right now count for transferring to UCLA?

even if you get start with summer classes its a bit difficult to transfer in a year.

best of luck though

what you found were classes that you need to take for a specific major.. for ge you need to check igetc and then follow the pattern.

by the way, transferring in one year would be pretty painful. you will have 4 quarters or 2 semesters include summer and winter to fill up 60 units. it seems really challenging, though.

10 units in summer 20 units in fall 10 units in winter 20 units in spring = 60 units.. it's just like being in the hell with no life!! kk

Well, I guess I'm aiming between 1-1.5 years.

Ok, so the IGETC is basically 34 semester units, 11 course right? They require 60 units, so do the rest of the units come from the classes from ASSIST?

You should finish IGETC and major requirements at CC, which should add up to sixty units, if not then take electives.

UCLA Undergrad Admissions: Transfer Major Prep - Communication Studies

Welcome to ASSIST

Those are the 2 links you need to know. Also briefly talk to a counselor at your local community college. And yes, finished IGETC, join your honor society club like AGS and absolutely do UCLA's TAP.

That's all you need to know, nothing more. Do most or all of your major pre-req's if you can.

=[ Dude, dont think about starting early etc right now. Your in shock, do something else than think about college admissions ...

I'm currently taking 22 units. If you are a diligent worker, you shouldn't to much of a problem. Just be ready to work hard.

I would check and see if you college offers summer and winter courses. Most college offer summer, so just check on winter courses. Check the maximum number of units allowed for winter and summer sessions. Also check and see which classes are offered during summer and winter. Summer classes consist of, mostly, lower division courses. Make sure to not take the classes during the normal semester that you can take during summer.

These are just things to observe. I would check with your college counselor. They can set up a college course plan for each semester. Just make sure they know you are dedicated to complete the IGETC + the transfer required courses in the time you wish to finish in. More important, make sure you are dedicated. It won't be easy.

Don't listen to premed.

CaliforniaLife gave good advice.

If you are doing this just because it sucks to see all your other friends go on to good colleges and you're stuck to just going to a CC being dissapointed around graduation, then use that motivation to stick out one tough year at a CC.

Doing it all in one year has its advantages, people tend to get lazy at CC at one point during their 2 years, i know I did.

Maybe you can just squeeze out a really efficient 1 year and get into LA that way. 2 years is bullsht seriously, take into account you'll most likely miss out of precious dorm years, which are 2 years generally but UCLA offers third years dorming options too.

Any other concerns or questions you can PM me.

Btw you must be full on dedicated, especially if you want to go to UCLA under COMM. you need to have a 3.5 just to be considered, zero room for error.

Dont listen to RCHANG

Premed gave good advice.

I would take a few days and relax. A lot has happened in the past day, and I think it would be unhealthy to give yourself a false sence of comfort by looking into classes to take at a cc, when you wont even be able to register for a good 3 months.

I didnt say transfering after one year was a bad thing, heck Im doing it.

good to plan ahead, go to CC online catalog (as soon as it is avaliable) and do summer classes. many of the pre-req also fulfill GE, so, it is possible

Thanks SO much RCHANG, I think I will definitely be dedicated for this next year. Premed, since you're doing 1 year transfer, want to offer some advice on it? Haha.

And wouldn't I be able to take classes starting now at a CC? I thought high schoolers were able to register for classes at a CC while taking classes back at our regular HS? Plus spring quarter registration for classes is coming up! And yes, they do have Winter Quarter there, so I can take classes year-round.

RCHANG, as for the first link you provided, do I need to finish all those classes? It said to finish two of them, but are those the pre-reqs or are pre-reqs COMPLETELY different? And pre-reqs = IGETC?

Sorry, I'm really new in this whole units, courses, credits thing...trying to learn everything.
