Starting really late -- at age 44!

After 20+ years in the business world, i'm going back to school for musical theater - presuming successful auditions and admission! Looking for advice and inspiration.

Do you know anyone who has done, or is currently doing, the same?

Can an "old lady" with raw talent compete with young, talented and experienced kids?

Do you know of any Broadway success stories that include people who started late in life? (A "Grandma Moses" of the Great White Way"!)

I've read through many, many threads which have been incredibly helpful. It's a daunting proposition, but I'm up for the challenge.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and encouragement!

I would say it’s never too late to pursue one’s dream. Good luck. At my D’s school, there was an older person in her choir, but I don’t know what her major was. Perhaps music ed. They referred to her as “the old lady” with the emphasis on OLD. I don’t know how old she was (probably 40s) but she was ancient to the other kids. :D

I know someone who went back and got a BFA at your age-- she loved it and is thrilled she did it, does a lot of community theater now. I think broadway is unlikely, but nothing is impossible, and the fact is that for actors as all artists, the chance to do your work is the great satisfaction, and working at something you love is its own reward. Good luck!

I think it’s possible. There is a freshman in my program at Roosevelt University who is nearly 30 and he is doing quite well in the program. It definitely would not hurt to try!

Good for you for going for your dream! I’m in my fifties and acting is my passion-I do a lot of community theater and occasionaly(sic) paid non-union work. Wish I had the singing and dancing talent to do musicals like my d who is studying musical theater!
The nice thing about the acting field is there isn’t an age limit- you obviously audition for roles close to your castable age, so there are great roles as you get older.

You might also want to get a strong background in straight theater and film, as that expands the roles that you will be able to play.

Thanks for all the supportive comments from everyone! I’m trying to be both realistic and think that anything is possible!

I would love to connect with any “old” person currently in a musical theater program.

If you are a student, or a parent of a student, who knows of such a person, I would be monumentally grateful for help making a connection.

Regards to all of you. I’ve only been reading these forums for a few weeks, but I’m so impressed with the amazing people - parents, students and others, on this site. What a great community.
