Starting to look at fall classes ... where do i look?

Love the enthusiasm!

Ok -
so books…
what’s the theory here - do we just get them as son as possible before the used ones get taken or wait until closer and see if they get used ones for the ones currently only avail. new?

Seems the used prices at the UA bookstore are fairly competitive with other sites, plus can pick up there - maybe not worth too much looking around?

thoughts?

My son tells me that if you do not buy the books from the UA bookstore, you cannot tell them back there. Don’t know if you want to keep that in mind as you make purchases. That said, you can resale them to other outlets like Amazon.

Some students prefer to wait until the first day of class – just in case a professor changes his mind and does not want to use a particular textbook.

My son has some friends who rent textbooks online, because they do not plan to keep them for additional classes. They feel they do better financially.

Aha! Let me tell you about the books…I’ve already ordered books for two classes for D (they were the only two that had them already listed.)

I first looked at the Supestore site to see what their used & new prices were. Then I went to bn.com (Barnes & Noble’s website.) We pay for the yearly membership so we get free shipping direct from them plus a discount. They also have a network of used book dealers. I got the correct ISBN (International Standard Book Number) from the BN site (making sure that it was the correct edition i.e. 7th edition as noted in the Supestore.) I then googled the ISBN. Alibris is a site I’ve used in the past also. I ended up ordering the almost $240 of Italian textbooks for a total of $88  Most of those were through the BN used book dealer network. They say that they are in very good or new condition. As my D noted to me, she is used to having used books, as they get passed on from year to year in public schools. There were a couple of new ones that I got from BN direct; they may have been a little cheaper on Amazon but I would have had to pay shipping so it was a wash.

I did order one from the Supestore as it wasn’t available in any other place.

Re the book rental sites. We looked at Chegg and a few others and the prices for the foreign language books were only about $20 less to rent than we paid for a “new” condition used book. D is most definitely the daughter of a librarian and is thinking she’ll want to keep most books for now so it made sense to buy the used books for her. Of course, I don’t like leasing cars either, so YMMV :)

or wait until closer and see if they get used ones for the ones currently only avail. new?

The used ones go first.

So what does it mean if for a given class (looking at Math145 here) there are three books and it says choose one? Looks like one is a combo of the other two, one is a web access thing, and one is the book - help??!!!

I know that sounds like a dumb question but I can’t believe they really mean to pick just one…

If the web access thing is about $40, you do need to buy that.

As for the books…they may be selling the required books as a combo set or individually (in case you already have a part of the set.)

When in doubt, email the prof and ask which you need to buy.

Ok…

I just looked…

It looks like the first choice is the book which also includes the online web assign.

The second choice is just the book

The third choice is just the web assign.

I would call the book store tomorrow and ask if the combo pack includes a hard bound book or if only the second choice does. It’s not clear.

RobD: My son is definitely the child of a media specialist. He understand the word, weed.

He only keeps the books that he feels he will possibly use again someday. There haven’t been many.

In terms of used books, you also can check out abebooks.com. This is a site that features all sorts of used book dealers. You even can negotiate with them with the price in some cases. One of my fellow teachers raves about the site – I think he needs a mansion to keep all of his books.

www . bookfinder . com

momreads: D surprised me yesterday by weeding our upstairs bookcases and organizing previous years English & History required texts for her sister  She is ready to make a trip to McKays in the near future. But traditionally, she finds it hard to let go of books. Obviously her mom is a reference librarian and has no responsibilities in collection development & management ;)

momreads: thanks for the site. Have purchased used books online with good results but I wasn’t aware of any sites where negotiating a price might be an option.

So, we can actually buy the books for class now? I got the impression at Bama Bound that ISBN numbers were not given out. Where can we find those? I would like to go to Amazon and order the books by mail ahead of time just to have them ready beforehand, to beat the mad rush on the first day of class.

The students at the student panel at Bama Bound said that professors won’t give assignments if a book is sold out, but I wouldn’t want to take that for granted. I know that wouldn’t fly at our high school. You are expected to have your books for the first day of class.

Back when I was in college, there were many used book stores around campus. Is there any such thing at Bama? Where are they located? Will they be open during Alabama Action, so we can maybe buy some used books there before Welcome Week?

When I was in school, only new books were available at the campus book store. Are used books available at the SupeStore?

Monte -
May be a better way to get to the ISBN, but this works…

In MyBama, got to “Look Up Classes”
Search for your specific class (ie. Math145)
Select the CRN# from your child’s chosen class
At the bottom of that screen there is a listing for Textbook Information with ISBN

Montegut: You go on the SupeStore site and look under textbook. Scroll down for the department, course number, section and professor. Some of the books for courses are listed, some are not. The used ones are also listed.

Again, if you buy from Amazon or any other retailer, you cannot sell your books back to the SupeStore.

So the SupeStore buys back used books? You don’t have to find an offsite bookstore to sell your used books?

Can you buy your books ahead of time online from the SupeStore?

That may be an option for books that you will probably not keep for your major, ie, noncore courses.

As a bio major married to an engineer, the chemistry, calculus, biology, and yes, even thermo books are still sitting on the shelf. Of course, some have been strategically placed on the bottom shelf for the benefit of the cats. Inside joke.

Places like BN textbook will buy them regardless of where they were purchased. They will even send you a shipping label so you dont pay to send it to them. We have used them in the past for daughters textbooks when no one, even the school, would buy them. Might not get lots of money but some is better than nothing.

Yes, the SupeStore buys back books that it sells – in most cases. My son had one book that it would not take. He figures that the professor is changing editions or books. But we’ve been on Amazon and they’ll take it.

If you order books online at the Supe Store, tell your child not to wait until classes start to pick them up - otherwise too busy!

When you come for “move in day,” pick them up then or during WOW week. The Supe store will have them gathered up for you in a bag. All you do is give your name and show your Action card.

To order your books online from the Supe Store, go to Mybama, then go the Student tab, and the link is there in the left hand column (Order Textbooks Online). You don’t need to know what is needed, you put in the course and the section, and it will tell you what you need…
