How is UCLA for English? I literally know nothing about the school, but someone recommended that I apply, so I'm trying to learn :)

Some (very, very) basic stats:

GPA: 3.93 UW, 4.43 W

SAT 2200 (800 CR, 780 W, 620 M)
SAT II's (retaking) (760 lit, 700 us history)
ACT 32 (36 reading, 35 english, 29 math, 29 science)

AP's: Lit, Lang&Comp, US History (all 5's)

EC's:
Debate (top team in the state, quarterfinalists at debate nationals)
Forensics (semifinals at nationals, 5th at state, top 3 at numerous local tournaments)
Editor in chief of award-winning school newspaper
Class president (10, 11, 12)
Part of one of the top treble choirs in the state (we do national/international tours and perform at a lot of conventions)

In addition, I will be at least national merit commended and probably semifinalist. I've got plenty more ECs but I won't bore you -- I just wanted to know if this is within my range.

i would recommend you to apply with your stats. ucla has a really strong english department. i hear there's a ton of reading and it's pretty intense but i guess english-majors dont mind.

again, make sure you write quality personal statements in order to combat the out-of-state disadvantage. i think you should still apply because you have strong credentials and would be a match if you were in-state.

the english dept. is tops in southern california and most of the US. however, what turned me away from it was the 5 courses in foreign language that you HAVE to take. uugh
