I just finished my freshman year as an engineering major at cornell and am trying to figure out what I want to do with my life, with grad school being an option. Most of my indecision comes from trying to decide what major I should pursue. I initially wanted to do Operations Research but now I'm starting to think about doing an independent major. The way independent majors work is there is primary focus w/in engineering and a secondary focus in any other subject. My primary focus would be essentially OR with some extra applied math stuff and my secondary focus would be sociology. This may seem random, but I am really interested in applied math and math modeling in the social sciences. But my worry is that the independent major might be too narrowly focused for graduate school (if I choose to go).
So should I go for the more general OR major or the more specialized independent major, even though I'm not even sure I want to go to grad school?

As long as you have a good GPA, decent GRE scores, and relevant research experience (this is key), graduate schools shouldn't care too much about your actual major. What do you want to do in graduate school anyways? Masters? PhD?

The 'independent major' sounds a little wishy-washy to me, but hey, to each his own.
